  • St Athanasius Church is honored to be the host of the Episcopal Consecration of Bp.-elect Gerardo Zendejas by Bps. Richard Williamson, Jean-Michel Faure and Tomas de Aquino on May 11, 2017, as well as of the first Pontifical Mass the next day celebrated by the newly consecrated Bishop.

    EVENTS:

A reception will be held around 1pm in a hotel (to be announced later) to which all the priests are our guests in a special table; laypeople are asked to pay a fee (more information to follow later).
May 12: Episcopal Mass celebrated by Bp. Gerardo Zendejas at the same place and time followed by the Consecration of Russia to the Immaculate Heart of Mary by our four Bishops.
A picnic follows the ceremony in a nearby place (half a mile), Wolf Trap National Park.

    PLACE:
Behind the Rectory at 1316 Trap Rd.
    22182 Vienna, Virginia
Parking: at the Church 9102 Leesburg Pike
Other option: Wolf Trap National Park (half a mile)
Not at the School parking nearby.

    Quality Inn Tysons Corner
    1587 Spring Hill Rd
    Vienna VA 22182

It is recommended to book with them as soon as possible because half of the hotel rooms have been already booked by a nearby Protestant sect for an event around the same dates!

If you prefer to book with another hotel, we recommend to look in the 'Tysons Corner' area which is our closest commercial place, or in downtown Vienna.

Do not miss this historical date.

    Let's pray for the Bishop-elected!

Let's pray St Joseph for good weather!

  • ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE ELECTION TO THE EPISCOPATE OF FR. ZENDEJAS

    Fourth Bishop

Bishops there must be, where souls strive for Heaven.
Try Vienna in Virginia, May eleven!

Ever since the summer of 2012 when the Society of St Pius X decided officially to change course and abandon the doctrine-first stand taken 40 years previously by Archbishop Lefebvre, it has been interesting to watch Providence in action to ensure the Church’s defence. One might have expected a widespread uprising in defence of God’s Truth. Resistance from inside the Society? Existent, but at least up till now, largely silent. And from outside? Existent, but only a scattering of layfolk and a handful of priests, riven by divisions for lack of a recognised authority. Catholics need authority. And that need is so great that even while Truth is draining out of the man-centred Newchurch and the Rome-centred Newsociety, still souls cling to each because of the remains of Papal authority in the former, and of Catholic authority bequeathed to the latter by the Archbishop.
But Truth remains the purpose of Authority and Authority is not the purpose of Truth. Given fallen human nature, Authority is the indispensable defender and guarantee of Truth, but it comes after Truth and not before. Take for example one of Our Lord’s last instructions to Peter before He will leave Peter behind to govern the Church (Lk.XXII, 31–32): “Simon, Simon, behold Satan hath desired to have you (plural), that he may sift you as wheat. But I have prayed for thee (singular) that thy faith fail not (Truth); and thou, being once converted (Truth), confirm thy brethren (Authority).” And when on Palm Sunday a few days beforehand the Pharisees had attempted to rebuke Our Lord for the joyful noise being made by His disciples, so necessary is the adoration of God in Truth that Our Lord replied (Lk.XIX, 40): “I say to you that if these shall hold their peace, the stones will cry out.”
In today’s Newchurch, Authority is mixing Conciliar error with Catholic Truth in the engine o f the Church, which is like mixing water with gasoline (petrol) in the engine of a motor car – the car is crippled, the Church is crippled. And whereas Archbishop Lefebvre defied that crippling, not least of all but rather above all, by his consecrating of four bishops to maintain a Catholic authority that would protect God’s Truth, his successors at the head of what was once his Society are doing their utmost to submit his protection of Truth to the crippled and crippling Authority of Rome! If these successors seriously think that once they are “inside the official Church” they will be in a position to convert the neo-modernists, they are excessively naive. Already they are holding their fire on Vatican II. Just when do they imagine they will be able to open fire again?
In these quite exceptional circuмstances, there must be disciples of Our Lord who tell the Truth – so as to spare the stones the effort! These disciples may not be united as they would be beneath tr ue Authority (always allowing for human weakness). They may be “straitened and cast down,” they may suffer “tribulation and persecution” (cf. II Cor. IV, 8–9), but they must be there for as long as Truth is held in captivity. Will that be a long time? God knows. Many of us expected Him to intervene long ago, but God has a very long fuse. However, intervene He will, if anything at all is still to be saved. Patience.
Meanwhile these disciples need a handful of bishops to ensure a minimal continuation in Truth of episcopal teaching and of the sacraments of Confirmation and Holy Orders. In 1988 the Archbishop consecrated four of them for the same reason, two for Europe, and one each for North and South America. As of now the “Resistance” has two in Europe and one in South America. There remains a gap in North America. God willing, this coming May 11 Fr. Gerardo Zendejas will be consecrated bishop in the Traditional parish of Fr Ronald Ringrose in Vienna, Virginia , USA. Please pray for the blessing of Almighty God upon the ceremony – and for good weather!

    Kyrie eleison.

    H.E. Bp. R. Williamson

  • Biography of Bishop-Elect Gerardo Zendejas

Bishop-elect Gerardo Zendejas was born in Mexico in 1963.
He studied at the Society of Saint Pius X Seminary Nuestra Señora Corredentora, of La Reja, in Argentina.
He was ordained a sub-deacon in 1986 by Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre and a deacon in 1987 by Bishop de Castro Mayer. He was ordained a priest by Bishop Alfonso de Galareta on the 10th of December 1988.
He spent the first eight years of his priesthood in Colombia. In 1989, he became the prior of Bogota, and in 1992, he opened a school in a poor area which numbered up to 320 students under his direction.
In 1996, he was appointed collaborator of Father Jean Espi at the San Atanasio priory in Guadalajara and in 1997, collaborator of Father Rafael Navas at the retreat house in Zapotiltic, Mexico.
He left for the United States in 1998 where he was appointed to the SSPX retreat house in Ridgefield (Connecticut).
In 2000, he became the prior of Ridgefield where he exercised his ministry for the next nine years. During this time, he opened a school under the patronage of Padre Pio (2006). He also encouraged the pilgrimage to Auriesville, New York, in honor of the North American martyrs, which gathered up to 1,300 pilgrims.
In 2009, he was named prior of Queen of Angels Church in Dickinson, Texas, and took over the school’s direction.
He joined Bishop Williamson in 2014 after having been on a thirty day Ignatian retreat in France.
He is experienced in the founding and directing of schools and the preaching of Ignatian retreats.
He recently bought a house near Ridgefield, New York, to preach retreats in. Bishop Thomas Aquinas preached the first retreat there from the 7th to the 12th of November 2016.
He exercises his ministry mainly in the states of Texas, Kansas (St. Mary’s), Connecticut and New York.
Bishop-elect Zendejas spent two weeks in Europe in 2017 and participated in the ceremony of the taking of the cassock of Bishop Faure’s seminarians, in Avrillé, on the 11th of February. He is an active member of the Society of the Apostles of Jesus and Mary founded by Bishop Faure.
He speaks Spanish and English and understands French.
Bishop-elect Zendejas will be consecrated a bishop in St Athanasius Church of Father Ronald Ringrose in Vienna, Virginia, in the United States on the feast of the Holy Apostles Philip and James, on the 11th of May.

  • Since a protestant group is taking over the other half of the main hotel, it might be a good idea for the Catholics to wear something that identifies them as Catholics, so when you see someone in the hallway, lobby, etc. you know if it's "one of ours" or not. It would help in the area of meeting new Trad Catholics, socializing, etc.

Maybe a particular color, maybe a Miraculous Medal, a scapular, or something. At least wear this around the hotel -- you can tuck it back under your shirt when you get to St. Athanasius Chapel where everyone is Catholic.

It should be something simple, something EVERYONE can do, and something all types of people would be willing to do -- the young and the old, the rich and the poor, the sophisticated and the down-to-earth, the extremely macho male and extremely dainty female. But most importantly, it has to work for the introvert and the extrovert. Extroverts love drawing attention to themselves -- introverts not so much.

But we should all (introvert and extrovert alike) want to identify ourselves to fellow Trads who traveled from all over the country to be at this Consecration. Part of the fun of going is meeting all kinds of Trads from all over the world.

    Just an idea --

Because there might not be much difference, on the outside, between the protestants and the Catholics in this case. The protestants ARE renting a hotel room, which means they are travelling, which means it's a major event they're attending. They will probably dress up, rather than wear casual clothes (t-shirt, jeans, shorts), even if they normally wear casual clothes to their Sunday services.

  • Why this Consecration is certainly historic:

    1. It is the first consecration of a Traditional Catholic bishop in the United States who is not Sedevacantist and/or Thuc-line. This will also be the first bishop whose priestly apostolate was primarily in the United States since Fr. Williamson was chosen in 1988!

    2. Even today, there are not THAT MANY Trad bishops in the recognize-and-resist Traditional Catholic world. A Bishop is still a very big deal. Unlike the Thuc-line bishops (which inspired an article called, "Two Bishops In Every Garage", the SSPX/Resistance world is nowhere near there yet. Right now the neo-SSPX and Resistance have a total of 6 bishops, most of whom are over 70, and the rest of whom are in their 60's.

    3. It is the first consecration of a new generation of bishops. Fr. Zendejas is 54 years old. All the current Trad (non-Sede) bishops are of an older generation. Of all the "old school" priests formed by the SSPX over the years -- 70's, the 80's, the 90's, the early 2000's -- Fr. Zendejas is the first to be chosen for consecration.

    4. Closely related to #3, this is the first bishop that thousands of SSPX/Resistance Catholics nationwide knew as a priest for years -- even decades -- before he became a bishop. Very few Catholics are old enough (or Trad long enough) to have known "Fr. Williamson" for 10 years before he became a bishop. I didn't know Fr. Faure at all until he was consecrated and became Bishop Faure. Same for Dom Thomas Aquinas.

    5. Statistically speaking, a 54-year-old has a lot of life left in him. He could easily spend 2 or 3 more DECADES as bishop, affecting the Traditional Catholic world all the while.

    6. Americans should be particularly excited, because Fr. Zendejas' sphere of activity is right here in the United States of America. Sure, he's Mexican, and he speaks Spanish better than he speaks English, but he still has been in America a long time, so we've kind of adopted him! Let's put it this way: he has spent the majority of his days living in the United States, since about 1998. He might have an accent, but he doesn't seem "foreign".

    7. Even though he's not being given any jurisdiction at his consecration (that would be schismatic!), and we can't call him or consider him the "Bishop of North America", nevertheless in the practical realm he's going to be "our bishop" since his apostolate will continue to be in North America. He will always be just a long drive away -- not a trans-Atlantic flight away.

  • For what it's worth, I would like to attend, God willing. Fr. Zendejas has expressed on several occasions that he would like for me and my son to attend the Consecration if at all possible.

So far, I have a room secured in the hotel, and airfare for 1.

I'm an adventurer when it comes to travel -- I'm OK with most aspects of cross-country travel: the planning, time off work, separation from the familiar/normal/routine, hassle, inconvenience, discomforts, etc. The ONLY issue for me is cost. I am currently between programming gigs, a.k.a. unemployed. (That's why I had a spare 2 weeks to migrate CathInfo to a new software platform! hahaha)

Just 6 weeks to go until the big day -- we'll have to keep praying and see what happens.

  • Since a protestant group is taking over the other half of the main hotel, [....]

Would an energetic heart-felt "Boo!  Hiss!  be unacceptably uncharitable?   Never mind Nostra Aetate and its ilk, right?

[...] it might be a good idea for the Catholics to wear something that identifies them as Catholics, so when you see someone in the hallway, lobby, etc. you know if it's "one of ours" or not. It would help in the area of meeting new Trad Catholics, socializing, etc.   Maybe a particular color, maybe [..] something.

Hmmm.   I received my inspiration only within the last few hours, but be that as it may: As nearly all of us traditional Catholics know, the cassock color for a bishop is purple (or black with purple trim, but let's not get too fussy).  What most probably don't know is that the heraldic color for a bishop's crest is a surprising green.

So, perhaps, a purple or green t-shirt printed with either Bp.-elect Zendejas' coat-of-arms (a low-res screen-scraping if need be, altho' His Excellency-Elect might be reserving its unveiling for his day of consecration), or just his motto (untranslated from the Latin, the better to befuddle the Protestants and assist recognition by fellow traditional Catholics).  Or just an illustration of the broad-brimmed tasseled heraldic crest (don't use Abp. Lefebvre's crest: as an archbishop, he was assigned more  tassels than those to which Bp. Williamson & Bp.-Elect Zendejas are entitled), or failing that, a mitre, either 1 also bearing the date of consecration.  White ink on purple or green fabric might look really good [×].

For easier donning & doffing, a traditional basketball-jersey style generic knit shirt (is that what's called an "A-shirt" or "H-shirt"?) could be worn as an overshirt, especially by women for whom the mostly-bare arms of a t-shirt might be considered objectionably immodest.

The only issues I see right now are these:
    • Dwindling lead time for printing: probably no more than an octave (containing only 1 weekend) by the time most interested people read this;
    • Cost for small quantities that might be a barrier to those people objectively categorized as "poor" (e.g., on fixed incomes that sharply limit discretionary spending);
    • possible transfer of unset dye in a new colored overshirt that no one had time for a, um, prophyl@ctic laundering before wearing; and
    • the previous issue in combination with an inability to rule out unseasonably warm weather (altho' it's August in the Washington Metropolitan Area that's the unbearably hot & humid month--and I write as a Floridan who's experienced plenty of "hot & humid").

It could've been fun to see what could've been done with these ideas (and others like them), had there only been more lead time.  Sigh.

Note ×: I try to avoid commemorative t-shirts that are printed on white fabric; ponder fumbled BBQ sauce, chili, mustard.  But sometimes there are no practical (time, cost, or schedule) alternatives to white fabric.

  • I'm going too!

    AlligatorDicax,
That is a great idea! But, maybe if all would don Miraculous Medals or Brown Scapulars, that would be easier?

Or, we could paint crosses on our faces? Kind of akin to the war paint seen in "Brave Heart".

My sister suggested that you could simply tell every person you pass "Hi, I'm Catholic"! That works too...

One could even use labeling stickers on their shirt with an "I'm Catholic" on it or something.
Many people say "For the Honor and Glory of God!" but, what they should say is "For the Love, Glory and Honor of God". - Fr. Paul of Moll
