  • Dear Cathinfo-

    I have just been informed that anyone wishing to donate to Bishop Williamson should NOT send money to the St. Marcel Initiative website.

    Apparently it has been several years since any funds from donations or product sales through that website have been forwarded to the bishop.

    If you donate or purchase from that website in the belief you are helping the bishop, you are wrong.

    For anyone desiring to donate to Bishop Williamson, please use the following information (which I obtained directly from Bishop Williamson):

    “If you wish to give to me or to the house here in Broadstairs, here are some details —

    Bank —   Lloyds Bank, 3 Queen Street, Ramsgate, Kent CT11 9DL

    Sort code — 30 90 99

    Account no. — 30688668

    BIC —   LLOYDGB 21329

    IBAN —  GB15LOYD 3096 9333 9163 68

  • So, has someone been embezzling the money?

    His Excellency should set up a PayPal account and then people could send him money as a "friend" without any commission.

    No, but there has been a nearly universal PRESUMPTION that when one sends money to that website, or buys products from it, they are donating to Bishop Williamson.

    But at least, according to him, he hasn’t seen a cent from it in several years.

    In charity to both him, and presumptive donors, I wished to clarify that, in order that said donors or product purchasers are fully informed.

    I have it from him in writing.

    Yes, a PayPal account would be a good solution for him.

    Crazy! This is like a retiree saying they that they have not received a social security check in years. Apparently, they do not need the money.

    Someone reminded me that Bishop Williamson already has a PayPal account established (via the Respice Stellam website)  which is authorized by the Bishop, and current/active:

    https://respicestellam.wpcomstaging.com/donations/

    All donations intended for Bishop Williamson can be sent there (or to the bank account referenced above).

  • Why is this the case? So when I bought those four King Lear lectures so I could support Bishop Williamson he didn't get any of the money? I feel cheated and wonder why the Bishop allows this to happen without warning people sooner.

    Please pray for the repose of my soul.

  • Yes, we need answers, and need them now. This is quite scandalous because many people would have donated to it under the fair assumption that the Bishop was at least getting some of it.

  • I received the following email from one of the Board members of the SMI (excerpted from a longer email thread in which is also contained Bishop Williamson’s agreement with the following facts, and his consent to publish):

    “Here's what is problematic, Sean, in what you said:

    ONE: The Bishop spoke to you in some pique, with no intention
    that you go public with what he said.  If he had known you
    would do so,he would have been clearer in the details;

    TWO: The Bishop has benefited from St. Marcel donations, if not
    always directly.  Example: the substantial donation from an American
    benefactor, through St. Marcel (with the tax benefit), enabled him
    to purchase Broadstairs.  So, no, he didn't directly see a penny but,
    yes, without that donation he could not be living in the Broadstairs
    home;

    THREE: The production costs of both the reissued Rector's Letters
    (with volume-by-volume indexing) and the Dr. White bio (Voice of

    the Trumpet) were paid via St. Marcel.  Again, as with TWO, the
    Bishop did not see a penny but is happy that those books are now
    available;

    FOUR: Whenever a person asks that St. Marcel funds go to a
    cause supported by the Bishop - e.g., Dr. White's request that Voice
    of Trumpet royalties go to the Brazilian monastery - the request is
    honored.  Again,as with TWO and THREE above, the Bishop does
    not directly see a penny but does support where the funds are allocated;

    FIVE: The Bishop recently received an accountant's information on
    St. Marcel's income and expenditures.  What is dismaying, to be sure,
    is how much money is absorbed in website maintenance. This is a
    recurring problem: the technology that is supposed to be a helpful
    means can veer towards becoming an end unto itself.  However, the
    person  primarily responsible for the site is only going with the market
    rate.

    So, His Excellency - a bit frustrated - can say he never sees a penny
    but that's very different from saying those running St. Marcel [are] engaging
    in embezzlement or misuse of funds.
    • The Board has three members -
    • I am one of those members - none of whom has pocketed a penny
      from any donations.  In fact, at no charge I take care of the Bishop's
      incoming correspondence.

      Patrick McCarthy”

      [For the purpose of clarity, I am not sure if this remark is asserting that I alleged embezzlement-which I clearly did not- (in fact, my response to Ladislaus’s question on the matter clearly denies it), or, if Mr. McCarthy is merely addressing a suspicion which might arise in the mind of the reader, in light of my post regarding the bishop’s comments to me.  I am presuming the latter, but in any case am glad this was all a misunderstanding, and to quote the bishop’s favorite playwright, “Much ado about nothing.” -SJ]
