  • OK, I guess.  So, as I understand Wessex, Fr. Stephen  Abraham is H.E.’s “chaplain.”  He, apparently with the bishop’s approval, is giving the “green light” to folks who wish to attend SSPX chapels.  The UK district is somewhat “neutral” under Fr. Morgan, so a kind of détente exists between the non-resistance sspxers and those, who with the bishop and Fr. Abraham, represent the “soft side of the resistance.”  A way of compromise has been found; and, apparently, Bp. Williamson goes along with the arrangement.  In fact, so I understand Wessex, between Fr. Morgan and the bishop there is kind of a wink and a nod, i.e. “an unwritten agreement.  Father keeps a “low profile.”  He’s not entirely sympathetic to Menzingen but he keeps his mouth shut.  Frs. Morgan and Abraham understand one another and have introduced a kind of Mexican standoff between the two factions.  It's go along to get along.   Bp.  Williamson is still very much a ‘green lighter,’  though puzzlingly, he trashes Fellay and the sspx hierarchy at every opportunity.  Is that it?

  • Like you, Hollingsworth, I have to make sense of what is happening in the 'independent' sector which is also beset by that well-known SSPX-style secrecy. But we do have half a century of experience as trad watchers and somehow have a feel for anticipating things before they happen. By now it should be second nature!

Bear in mind the UK trad population is tiny and those fine distinctions listed on Matthew's spreadsheet are not easily pinned onto folk here. Old hands like the bishop know this and for the present may think it wise to hold fire. After Fr. Morgan goes, the situation may be different. This is not the dynamic approach but at least the bishop keeps on reiterating why the liberal tendency must be resisted. Everyone inside or outside the SSPX can use this as a crucial marker measuring their own individual arrangements.
