  • Fr. Stephen Stanich has been assigned as Prior in our chapel starting in August.  Does anyone know this priest?  What is he like?

  • No news is good news I guess.  Hopefully he's old guard.  We shall see.

He's been a priest for a long time; don't know exactly his date of ordination, or frankly much about him at all.
I might have met him a couple times in my seminary days; the name is certainly very familiar. He just wasn't my parish priest ever, so I don't know much about him.

  • I found the info with a quick Google search (let this be a lesson to you! hahaha)

    Quote
Who were the other priests ordained in your class in 1992?
They were Frs. Kenneth Novak, Christopher Leith, David Nichols, and Stephen Stanich; there were three other priests who have since left the Society. Frs. Lawrence Novak and Peter Katzaroff were also with our class, and they were ordained shortly after we were. By 1992 the seminary had moved from Ridgefield, CT to Winona, MN.

Here he's mentioned in a church bulletin:

  • I met him in the summer of 2002 in Rome, while there with Fr. Iscara for my summer apostolate.

I believe at the time, he had been stationed in St. Louis for several years, and other priests were asking him how he kept from being transferred regularly, like most others. He said something to the effect of knowing how to stay out of trouble.

Anyway, we were all sitting at a restaurant at the Vatican, when in walk a handful of priests, who see us, and exchanged pleasantries with Fr. Iscara and another Argentine SSPX priest whose name escapes me, but without stopping, and went to a table at the back of the restaurant where other priests were already seated.

Fr. Iscara leans over to us and says, “Do you know who that is?”

I shook my head no, and he says, “That is Fr. Rifan.”

Campos had just sold out 6 months prior, and likely as not, Rifan was there to work out details regarding his imminent episcopal consecration.

I remember Fr. Stanich looking back over at their table and softly, discretely pumping his fist into his other hand.

This is the extent of my knowledge of him, though I think he may once also have possibly been involved with the SSPX 3rd order?

  • Thanks for all the info, very helpful.  Now I understand that Fr. Post will be arriving with Fr. Stanich.  I was told that Fr. Post cannot say the words of Consecration without assistance because it takes him too long and makes strange sounds during the rite.  Can anyone confirm this?  If so, what are your impressions of this?

Why does Fr. Post have trouble saying the words of consecration?

In what manner does he receive "assistance" with this?

Is he an elderly man?  Possibly some neurological problem?

Without taking anything away from the good priest, if he cannot say Mass without problems such as this, should he be saying Mass at all?

  • Fr. Post always had a “unique” way of performing the Consecration, none of which meant he was either doing anything wrong or needed assistance. He’s up there in age now and I haven’t seen him in years so I can’t speak of anything lately but he, in my opinion, is a solid Traditional Priest. I wonder what the people making that claim would say about Padre Pio and his way of doing the Consecration.

How does Fr. Post do a consecration?

  • My apologies Sean, I didn’t post my response correctly. It’s not how he does it, it’s how he says the words, kind of hard to describe but he’s very deliberate and extremely focused in saying the words with emotion, again very hard to describe BUT IMHO, it’s very reverent. Wish I could provide a better description, if you ask 10 people that have been present at a Mass he’s provided, you may get 10 different descriptions. The very first TLM I ever attended he was the Priest and I very soon later converted so yes, I may be bias as he holds a special place in my heart, he was also very helpful to me when my Mother passed away.

  • I'm receiving this second hand and rumors are often a distortion of reality.  Thank you above for the first hand account.  The description I received was certainly strange but I take it with a grain of salt until I see it myself, especially in terms of Fr. Stanich needing to be present to assist.

  • I was at seminary when Fr. Stanich was there ... still a seminarian.  He seemed very solid, but was on the quiet side ... probably how he stayed out of trouble.  He was never very vocal but seemed to be solidly on board with the thinking of Bishop Williamson.

  • He was never very vocal but seemed to be solidly on board with the thinking of Bishop Williamson.

So were hundreds of other priests, or so it seemed.

Then when he got in trouble, they were solidly on board with Bishop Fellay.

For the SSPX, fidelity and obedience were always to the current superior, rather than the founder or his principles (if forced to choose).

Archbishop Lefebvre hadn’t been dead a year when Fr. Aulagnier (then District Superior of France) put out feelers to the Archdiocese (see Tissier’s Biography).

Obviously, he was not alone, if a few years later, they could elect Fellay Superior General for decades (ie., support in the 1994 General Chapter).

Things fell apart quickly after Lefebvre died, but seeming normalcy was retained for a while by the need not to alarm the faithful (and some clergy) while the whole edifice was reoriented on the sly.

Once Lefebvre died, the devil found his opening, and began to sow doubt.

You won’t find another with his mettle (Vigano has potential, but Lefebvre persevered to the end, as did de Castro Meyer and Lazo.  Rangel did not.).
