  • The Gospel reading for the 17th Sunday After Pentecost was St Matthew 22:34-46 in which we read that a certain Pharisee came to Jesus Christ and asked Him:

“Master, which is the greatest commandment in the law? [37] Jesus said to him: Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with thy whole heart, and with thy whole soul, and with thy whole mind.[38] This is the greatest and the first commandment. [39] And the second is like to this: Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. [40] On these two commandments dependeth the whole law and the prophets.”

Since that Sunday, I have thought about this reading as it relates to those in the SSPX leadership corps and certain of the laity who defend the Society and attack resistance folk. Certainly too, it relates to those in the resistance who attack with comparative hatred those who are within the SSPX or support them in some fashion.

These days,  seems to me our Blessed Lord is withholding His Blessing from the SSPX and the resistance movement, as it can be seen at present.  Each side “hates” the other and as expressed in this forum and others, and in sermons on each side also, we truly don’t love our neighbor Traditional Catholics because we have allowed our disagreements to instill hatred into our hearts for those whom we oppose.

The resistance initially broke off in opposition with the gradual modernist changes at work in the Society.  Rather than focusing on the goal at hand, the saving of souls, many words were wasted on how much folk disliked the Society supporters who opposed them and this has been going on now for over 3 years or more.  This can be said of the SSPX too.  Many a sermon and article does not miss an opportunity to “hate” the resistance and demean them in some form or other.

The end result is a spiraling down of each side.  The resistance is in the midst of internal discord and implosion, at least for the moment.  The SSPX doesn’t seem to know who they are anymore, as they are trying to please their large Trad donors, without which they would starve, while groveling to please the no church whom they apparently want to become a part of under some form of “agreement”.  Vatican II has become a non-issue and one gets the impression that a courtship is going on that both sides hope to result in a “marriage”.  In essence, the SSPX has lost its identity and may be on the verge of a wholesale book burning of any periodical denouncing Vatican II and the horrors it has brought on.

I am not advocating anything else but that which Our Blessed Lord commanded of us, to love our neighbor as we love ourselves.  What does that mean?  Others can say what it means to them, but for me, it means I can disagree, even vehemently, but do so in love, charity, and respect for the other.  Forums are prone to name calling and labeling as identities are withheld.  Restraint is needed.  The Society may use the most demeaning of descriptions for resistance folk, but again restraint must be used to not fall into the same dark pit in response to what is said of them. Those who have been punished privately and publicly for their resistance to modernist leanings must still love their neighbors while “resisting” the moves of those fellow Catholics with whom they disagree.

The flesh fears that if we love our neighbor or those we perceive to be our enemy, we will lose some advantage or position in the battle against satan. In reality, by succuмbing to hatred of our neighbor, we lose the battle anyway, as is happening now before our eyes.

  • Well, that's your insight, but it isn't perfect.

For my part, the two Resistance priests I have regular dealings with seem to be charitable, at peace, content, and in general have the sweet odor of Christ about them.

Maybe if more people had their charitable, balanced, and Catholic attitude, Tradition would be a happier place? You might be right in that sense.

But I think you're painting with a very broad brush there. There are plenty of examples of Traditional Catholics, both lay and cleric, who are already following your advice. Your post seems to allow for no exceptions, but I assure you they exist, both online (including CathInfo) and offline.

The real tragedy, in my opinion, is that these two priests are laboring in relative obscurity at the moment, at least in their Texas apostolate. How many Trads could learn from these priests' zeal, charity, sanity, etc.? They could learn to be less sectarian, how to be good Catholics, etc. but unfortunately the audience for these priests is all too small.

    God's will be done.
