Quoted from Fr. Rioult's "The Impossible Reconciliation" (English translation, p.5):

"Numerous priests and faithful have turned towards the Society of St. Pius X, less for doctrinal reasons than for an attachment to the Tridentine Mass...With several friends, we have started a working group in Paris which is endeavoring to prepare for the day when all the 'traditionalists' will be able to regain their place in the Church, in obedience to the Holy Father and under the authority of our bishops...It seems to me that the Jubilee Year 2000 could be the occasion for 'making a gesture of reconciliation which would be in favor of the Church.'  It is in this spirit, in total fidelity to the Supreme Pontiff and to the teachings of the Second Vatican Council, on behalf of many French Catholics, I ask you, Monsieur le Cardinal, if, in a gesture of charity towards our brothers, the Holy Father would lift the excommunication which has been pronounced against the bishops irregularly consecrated by Archbishop Lefebvre."


My Commentary:

1) Fr. Lorans (SSPX) was an active collaborator with GREC at this time, and currently controls the DICI website, which explains the new flavor of content found there;

2) It appears that Fr. LeLong's observation that 'many have turned toward the SSPX less for doctrinal reasons, than for an attachment to the Mass" was correct;

3) Notice the similarity of language regarding "regaining our place in the Church," which was one of the primary justifications of Bishop Fellay in 2012;

4) Notice also the intent to be obedient to "our bishops" (i.e., not SSPX bishops);

5) Most alarmingly, notice the intent to lend "total fidelity...to the teachings of the Second Vatican Council."

6) A "lifting" rather than a "nullification" of the bogus excommunication is requested (and eventually this is precisely what is granted);

7) GREC may be defunct, but its spirit lives within Menzingen;

8) The SSPX collaborators and supporters of GREC still strive for the impossible reconciliation.
