    ROMILDA FERRAUTO, from Rome, 03/05/2017

The prospect of an agreement between the Vatican and the traditionalist fraternity founded in 1980 (sic) by Monsignor Lefebvre had never been so close.  A record of which the Pope Francisco personally takes care of and of which Romilda Ferrauto, ex-head in head of the francophone section of Vatican Radio, analyzes the scope for La Vie.

A solution is close.  In Rome, almost no one doubts it: after decades of rupture and disruption, the SSPX should soon enter Rome.  Monsignor Guido Pozzo, secretary of the Pontifical Commission Ecclesia Dei, in charge of dialogue with her, confirms this without hesitation to La Vie.  In addition, in other recent interviews, he had already indicated they were heading towards a reconciliation " in the near future".

Another confirmation: the project of canonical regularization of the SSPX will be carried out easily by the creation of a personal Prelature.   This extremely flexible legal figure had not been applied to the present day more than Opus Dei.  The personal Prelature, which forms part of the hierarchical structure of the Church, is not limited to a territory, such as the dioceses, and allows the carrying out of particular pastoral charges.  Clearly this is " a good solution ".
While all attempts at reconciliation by the popes, from Pope Paul VI to Benedict XVI, failed, steps are being taken towards the end of the last "fracture" of the Catholic Church .  An announcement of the agreement on May 13, during Pope Francis's trip to Fatima, is a feasible hypothesis, according to Italian journalist Francesco Grana, author of a recent article that warned many newsrooms.  A date that Monsignor Pozzo, on the contrary, does not confirm: "I have always said that we have not defined a precise time period", responds.  Francesco Grana, for his part, wants to believe: "Because the SSPX has a great devotion for Our Lady of Fatima.  And because that would be a beautiful gesture, a beautiful gift ... "

     The pope to the maneuver
Young, dynamic and well-informed, Francesco Grana directs Il Faro di Roma ("the lighthouse of Rome"), an online newspaper, in Italian and Spanish, "which strives to take the world to the eyes of Pope Francis " Consolidates day after day.  "We are with Francisco", tends to add with conviction, a precision almost necessary return whereas the division does not cease to accentuate, in the Roman media panorama, between the detractors and defenders of the Argentine pontiff.  However Francesco Grana does not deny that the Holy Father could choose to defer the announcement a few weeks in order not to eclipse the other highlights of his trip to Fatima.  But he is absolutely sure and certain: the announcement will come before the summer [winter in the Southern Hemisphere.  Nota de NP] 2017 as Pope Francisco is in a hurry to close this dossier.  "Everything is in your hands.  When in the Vatican everything goes very fast, this means that it is Bergoglio himself who wants it, "says this fine connoisseur and admirer of the pope.

And to think that things started badly when, after the failure of the doctrinal discussions carried out under the pontificate of Benedict XVI, Bishop Bernard Fellay, Superior General of the SSPX, had very harsh words regarding the "new modernist pope" Whom he accused of promoting a dangerous relativism and holding "not truly Catholic" statements .  " But in fact the discussions continued behind the scenes," notes Francesco Grana, and this became known when, on the occasion of the Jubilee of Mercy, Pope Francis gave the surprise by granting Lefebvist priests the power to lawfully acquit sins To the faithful during the confession.  More recently, he has made an even more significant gesture: he validated, under certain conditions, the celebration of marriages by the priests of this traditionalist community.  "At bottom, the unit has already been restored," estimates the Italian press.

A more effective pastoral approach than doctrinal discussions
The most expert Vaticanists recognize, by the way, that the Lefebvre schism also reflects a French singularity and sometimes have difficulties to take their measure.  But what strikes them most, in the end, is that this pope from afar, indexed by conservatives, can achieve what Pope Benedict XVI could not.  The situation is paradoxical.  "To make it simple," says Francesco Grana, " it can be said that the pastoral approach is ultimately more effective than the doctrinal approach.  Pope Francis once said, joking, that theologians would have to be sent to a deserted island. "

In fact, if he does not deny the importance of theological studies, this pope privileges the concrete gestures, and wants to go very fast without hesitation.  The theological unity will come later.  He acted in the same way with respect to the Lutherans, on the occasion of the fifth centenary of the Reformation, or also with regard to the patriarch of Moscow with whom he met in Cuba.  In this precise case, full communion must be restored without waiting for the situation to be completely satisfactory.  If we believe the Vatican Insider, reputed to be close to the Holy See, Rome will not ask the members of the SSPX more than absolutely necessary to be Catholic: the profession of faith, recognition of the validity of the sacraments celebrated according to the liturgy Postconciliar and obedience to the pope.

     An agreement without conditions?
The crisis developed on the basis of opposition not only to the liturgical reform, but to the Second Vatican Council as a whole.  Does this mean, then, that he refuses to demand from the SSPX that he accept the cctas of the council?  Monsignor Pozzo replies that "the question is badly posed".  " The authority of the council , which on the other hand did not promulgate any new dogma, has never been in discussion with the SSPX, " said Commission Secretary Ecclesia Dei.  The problem is the correct interpretation of certain of its teachings and orientations.  However, "the deepening and clarification of the formulations and expressions contained in certain conciliar docuмents that pose difficulties to the SSPX, can and should continue after canonical regularization , " he added.
In this regard, we can point out that the SSPX has announced its intention to indicate a certain number of ambiguities, among which is the double hermeneutics, or in other words the double key of reading, of the council from the beginning: that of the renewal In continuity with the Tradition and the rupture with the Tradition.  Now, in two memorable speeches, Benedict XVI admitted the existence of a crisis linked to the Second Vatican Council and attributed responsibility to a virtual council that would have replaced the royal council.  The virtual council, according to the pope emeritus, would have altered the intentions of the Council Fathers.  Thus, "far from presenting any danger to the Church," says Bishop Pozzo, the doctrinal reflection that must follow the canonical regularization of the FSSPX "will represent, on the contrary, a great opportunity to reach a better understanding and a more authentic application of the spirit Of the Fathers of the Council. "

On the other hand, the constitution of a personal Prelature will allow the SSPX to maintain the autonomy necessary to carry out its apostolic and pastoral activities.  "It is a Society of clerical apostolic life that works in different countries and regions," recalls Bishop Pozzo.  "It preserves the disciplinary and theological traditions prior to the reforms of the Second Vatican Council, from where the need for an adequate structure".  In the same way, Benedict XVI erected a personal ordinariate for Anglicans eager to enter into Catholic communion, preserving their spiritual traditions, liturgical and pastoral, compatible with the doctrine of the Catholic Church.

In short: the full communion of the SSPX with the Church of Rome seems definitely imminent.  Well orchestrated strategy or simple irony of fate, concluding a canonical agreement with the traditionalists, says Francesco Grana in an amusing way, "the pope who annoys by his choices of life, will gain points against the conservatives and the nostalgic of the past.  It will silence those who accuse it of approaching Protestantism and want to provoke a schism in the Catholic Church "

In the wait, another schism could occur in the very heart of the fundamentalist camp, trapped by deep divisions.  But that is another business.
