JOHN VENNARI, A PERSONAL APPRECIATION
By Edwin Faust
I was always happy to see John. As soon as he came into view, or when I heard his voice on the telephone, I smiled. John had this effect on most everyone who came into his orbit. I think this was so because John was happy, and he communicated that happiness by his presence and words. It surrounded him like an aura, and those who were close to him could not help being drawn into that happiness in some measure.
But all men, we know, face difficulties in in this world. The sheer strain of making a living can weigh heavily, not to mention the demands of family life. And we haven't even gotten to the perplexities involved in trying to figure out the answers to the larger questions. John was certainly not immune to any of these problems. He was, in many respects, more acutely aware than most of the enormous dislocation of values in the modern world and the contemporary Church. He did all he could to redirect others to the proper orientation. He wrote tirelessly, researched deeply, traveled, spoke and gave himself generously to all who came to him for knowledge and guidance. But he carried his burdens lightly, with grace. And he never put himself first. When you spoke to him, you knew that you mattered to him, that he was regarding you with affection and a ready desire to help in any way he could.
Such humility, such a sense of service, of fraternal charity, is rarely encountered. It sprang to some extent from John's natural disposition, but most importantly, it was sustained by his profound Faith and devotion. John believed whole-heartedly in the Catholic Faith. He had full confidence in its doctrine and in the promise of eternal life. And the Faith gave him joy. He spread this joy wherever he went.
I met John almost 30 years ago, when I was a reporter for a daily newspaper researching an article for the Religion Page. I discovered that there was a monastery in the area at which a few monks maintained a chapel where the Traditional Latin Mass was said. I went there, met John, and we became friends immediately. It was as though we had been waiting to talk to each other eagerly for a long time and now we were blessed with the opportunity.
John helped me to understand what had happened to the Catholic Church, which I had been away from for many years. He guided me, through conversations, through recommended books, through the uplift I felt in his presence.
We traveled different roads through the years, and lived in different places. I was often preoccupied with job and family, and John married and became the father of three beautiful children, who I know were the joy of his life. But John has always been in my heart. I will always think of him with love and gratitude. I know I am but one among so many who will say the same thing. The measure of John's life can be found in all the loving words he has elicited and in the deluge of prayers, Masses and sacrifices offered for his body and spirit. I know that John would not want us to canonize him, but rather to pray for his soul. We who knew him will certainly pray for him, but we cannot help but be convinced that he is likely to be among the saints. Thank you, John, for all you have done for all of us. And may God bless your family.

God Bless John Vennari! Another loss that we can't afford. What an ominous portent that even the small comforts are being removed in these miserable times.

JOSEPH JOHN VENNARI, R.I.P.
(February 24, 1958 - April 4, 2017)
Quote
Dear Friends,
Joseph John Vennari died on Tuesday, April 4, 2017 at 10:46 a.m. E.S.T. It is not only Passion Tuesday, but the 98th anniversary of the death of Blessed Francisco of Fatima - the first Tuesday (the day dedicated weekly to the Holy Face) in April (the month dedicated to the Holy Face).

John received the traditional Sacraments and blessings of the Church several times during the past weeks and months. On Sunday, April 2, Holy Mass was offered in his hospital room. John was able to receive Holy Viaticuм one last time, as well as Extreme Unction and the Apostolic Blessing.

John died wearing the Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, and the cord of St. Philomena, with the St. Benedict Crucifix (with the special 'Happy Death' indulgence attached) next to him. He died shortly after the recitation of 15 decades of the Holy Rosary and during the recitation of the 'Commendatory' prayers for the dying, and being blessed with Holy Water.

He died with his wife Susan and a close family friend at his side. Immediately after his death, another Rosary was prayed for the repose of his soul.

Please keep the repose of John's soul in your Masses, Holy Communions, prayers and sacrifices. Funeral arrangements will be posted shortly. May John's soul, and all the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God rest in peace. Amen.

Thank you and God bless you,
The Vennari Family

.
Even while suffering greatly in his final hours, John had the consolation of the sacraments and his wife at the very end. He was very fortunate to be allowed this signal grace.
.
I have known Catholics who have been unable to receive Viaticuм or even to see a priest. Others, sadly, have had the opportunity to see a priest and have turned him away!
.
I was hoping he would be cured, actually. Those of us who were praying for his recovery, perhaps we did not have sufficient faith. Now our faith is being tested all the more. John Vennari's faith was tested and found to be intact, so let that be a lesson to us.
.
Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him.
May his soul and all the souls of the faithful departed rest in peace.

Amen.

Let me take the opportunity to say that the abbreviation, "R.I.P." is most often thought of as meaning, "Rest in Peace". However, this is a corrupted understanding due to the fact that these initials in Latin closely represent a similar thought in English, but not exactly.  It is really, "Requiescat in pace", which means, "May he rest in peace". The corrupted version tends to obscure that there is a Purgatory, and I am sure that the Novus Ordo appreciates that.

Sad that both Fr. Gruner and John Vennari are deceased barely two years apart. Watching Fatima Center will be very weird now.

I was thinking the same thing. In the past when I view one of their many videos, I've been accustomed to knowing these two men are alive and well, having met both of them on many occasions. But now, my memory is closed, the past is gone, and all I have is the recollection of what I heard and saw long ago. We are now in the post Fr. Gruner/John Vennari age.
.
Remember what it was like before Vat.II when we still had the Latin Mass at nearby parishes, and the choir sounded so great and the Holy Ghost canopy processing over the Blessed Sacrament to the Altar of Repose on Holy Thursday.  Now what is there?
.
Well, remember when we used to have Fr. Gruner and John Vennari?
.
What is going to happen to the Catholic Family News now? Is Edwin Faust going to take it over? Will Chris Farrara and Marianna Bartold team up to keep subscriptions rolling along? Is it going to merge with the Remnant, Michael Matt taking the reins?
.

Mr Vennari was always full of humor and good will.
I'll never forget his rendition of a Gilbert and Sullivan song that he rewrote the lyrics to- " The Leader of the Chancery" .
God graced him with so many talents.
Prayers for his wife Susan and their three beautiful children.
I pray Our Lady was right there to greet him with Fr Gruner right behind. I can't imagine one more deserving.

Let's hope that Mr. Vennari repented of the slanders & libels hurled at Card. Rampolla and by implication, Card Merry Del Val, Popes Leo XIII and St Pius X.

How does one used emoticons with the quick reply function?-- I don't see them..

 May he rest in peace.

With now both Fr. Gruner and John Vennari gone into eternity before the anniversary dates of the apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima, it gets even more serious now. We must as always keep praying and offering sacrifices.

The Rosary this evening at the funeral home was well attended. There was about another 30-40 people behind my vantage point, so I would estimate around 120 total? I'm sure there were many more who came by, during the day. I can only imagine how many people will attend the funeral Mass tomorrow...

On April 8, 2017, priests of the SSPX performed a solemn high requiem Mass for Mr. John Vennari at a local church in Buffalo, NY.
John Vennari, editor of Catholic Family News for over 20 years, died on the morning of Tuesday, April 4, 2017. Solemn ceremonies were organized for his funeral, Saturday, April 8.
Due to the small size of the Society of Saint Pius X's Our Lady of the Rosary Chapel in Buffalo, local Bishop Richard Malone kindly allowed the use of a diocesan church for the Requiem Mass. The administrator of Buffalo's Corpus Christi Parish, Fr. Michał Czyżewski, OSPPE, graciously opened his church to the Society for the occasion.
At Mr. Vennari's own request expressed before his death, Fr. Adam Purdy, former pastor of Buffalo's Society chapel, offered the Solemn High Mass. He was assisted by Canadian District Superior Fr. Daniel Couture as deacon and Fr. Nicholas Gardner, current pastor of the Buffalo mission as subdeacon. Attending in choir were Fr. Jean Violette, prior of St. Ignatius Retreat House, Ridgefield, CT; Fr. Dominique Boulet, prior of St. Michael Priory, Toronto, Canada; Fr. Justus Ndyamukama of St. Anthony Church, Buffalo, and Fr. Marijan Procyk of St. Nicholas Ukrainian Church, Buffalo. Several other priests, including Fr. Gerard Beck, First Assistant to the U.S. District Superior, were also to have assisted but were prevented in doing so by inclement weather.
The choir from the SSPX's St. Peter Church in New Hamburg, ON sang at the Mass. SSPX Brothers from the Canadian district and laymen from the United States and Canada comprised the schola. Catholics attending the Traditional Mass for the first time (or for the first time in decades), many non-Catholics and even non-Christians were visibly moved at the beauty of the Church's traditional obsequies.
Immediately following the Requiem Mass, the interment took place at Mount Calvary Cemetery in nearby Cheektowaga, NY.
Requiescat in pace.

From what I hear, there were quite a few canceled flights because of the storm that swept through on Friday, but thankfully plenty of people made it out to his Funeral. Corpus Christi Church is one beautiful place to have a Latin Mass if ever I've seen one.

Anyway, I have a lot of prayer cards for John if anyone is interested. If you'd rather not go through me, perhaps you could send a request to Matthew and I'll send them through to him. That is of course if Matthew would be willing to do that. No charge of course.

I know Father Purdy because he is the priest at my mission now. And Father Gardner used to be the priest at my mission. I like Father Purdy as a priest. Father Gardner is so young. He looks like a baby and I am not that old myself. I went to college in Buffalo but that was before I was a traditional Catholic so I am not familiar with the traditional Catholic presence in the area.
