  • At 44:58 in this video, Fr. Pfeiffer says it is a "universal, customary dispensation" and "a tradition" to eat meat the day after Christmas when Christmas is on a Thursday.  He goes further and says that one does not need to ask permission for a dispensation on that day.

I haven't heard of this before.  Have any of you?

It seems that in Britain this year a dispensation was given, but I would like to know why Father Pfeiffer says (to Americans) that it is a "universal, customary dispensation" and no dispensation is needed.

    http://vaticaninsider.lastampa.it/en/world-news/detail/articolo/regno-unito-united-kingdom-reino-unido-37017/

(Please note: Father Pfeiffer is not talking about the day after Thanksgiving dispensation that some believe Pius XII gave to the USA.)

It's kind of a ridiculous and silly topic to introduce, IMO.  However, that having been said, it will probably garner at least 20 pages of comments.  Just watch.

  • If it is "universal" why do all the calendars show that it is a day of abstinence?

Why wouldn't this apply to any other Holy Day, the Feast of the Circuмcision or Ascension Thursday, for example?

It seems to me that Fr. Pfeiffer is making things up.

It seems to me that if he was making it up and then spreading it around the internet that would be a mortal sin. I don't think he is making it up. More likely he was told this by someone and is simply wrong.

  • This seems related to the Boxing Day celebrated on Dec 26th in Britain and her former colonies: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boxing_Day

Don't think it is universal though.

Here we go!  The 'bud' is opening; an ugly brown 'flower' is about to bloom.  Now, we understand, if Father is just "making it up," he may be guilty of committing mortal sin.  Oh my!  Please put the topic out of it misery early on.  I can think of a number of other reasons for criticizing Father,  but this one does not rise to the occasion.

He was neither making it up nor wrong.

From The Key of Heaven (imprimatur 1951):

Key of Heaven is a pious prayer book.  I am looking for a source for saying there is a universal dispensation for the whole Church.

It's good enough for most of our consciences; has an imprimatur.  We needn't get all Jansenistic/rigoristic about such things.  Even a parish priest could dispense individuals from the normal Friday abstinence.  It's not like we're being dispensed from the 5th Commandment or something.

  • I was taught that the Friday in the Christmas and Easter Octaves doesn't apply for abstinence. Same thing for any other first-class feast, e.g. Sacred Heart...

Yes, methinks that the accusations of "mortal sin" were premature.

I did not accuse Fr. Pfeiffer of mortal sin. I said that if he were to make that up (as another poster suggested that he did) and spread it, I thought it would be a mortal sin. I then said I did not believe he did make it up.
