Unbelievable. This place is beautiful and huge. Shut. Down. Why not buy this instead of building multi billion dollar new building? I bet a sweet deal could be gotten from this place.

AP PHOTOS/BEBETO MATTHEWS Sister Camille D'Arienzo, 76, a past president of the Brooklyn Sisters of Mercy order who worked from Sisters of Mercy convent offices, listens during an interview in New York, Wednesday, Jan. 6. The order's governing body plans to close the 146-year-old Sisters of Mercy motherhouse on Willoughby Avenue in Forth Greene at the end of January, citing prohibitive renovating costs.
    Matthew 5:37

But let your speech be yea, yea: no, no: and that which is over and above these, is of evil.

My Avatar is Fr. Hector Bolduc. He was a faithful parish priest in De Pere, WI,

Usually the SSPX won't be able to buy this kind of property directly. The diocesan staff usually checks the background of the prospective buyer. Unless another party is willing to buy it first from the diocese and then, sell it to the Society.

  • Unfortunately, this article says it would cost $20 million "to fix structural and safety probems". They've often bought through third parties, but it would probably be difficult to find someone convincing, with a building this expensive.

Parentsfortruth - I agree, Father Hesse was a splendid priest and a brilliant speaker. It was very sad he died so young - we need him. He'd certainly have been on the side of the Resistance!

This is what Father Bolduc did at least in the case of Saint Mary's Kansas. I'm sure there might have been others. Why not do this again?

So? That's $20 million. They're ready to spend $160 million! That's $140 million LESS than building a new one. I mean, they can't be charging that big of a figure if there's that much that needs to be done structurally. It has absolutely BEAUTIFUL INCOMPARABLE art that cannot be replicated these days unless you want to spend 3 times as much as they want to spend on the current $160 million project!

  • Here is a possibility, near Phoenix, Arizona., there is the old Mission
San Jose de Tumacacori built in 1692 now part of a National Park.
In this era of high and out of sight deficits and over spending by the
    Federal Government.
The National Park service might want to give this church to people
whom would care for it and continued existence.

I learnt that in the District of Great Britain, Fr. Morgan have been doing that, not only from the Novus Ordo dioceses but also from the Anglicans. It was not until the +Williamson interview that even the Anglicans put a stop to such selling of their buildings to the SSPX. Now, even though +Williamson has been expelled from the Society, I'm not sure if they still are able to continue buying from the Anglicans. But certainly the stigma is still there.

I bet they would have no problem selling the properties to LDS or Hare Krishnas.
