“I celebrate mass according to the Latin Rite to show that using it is normal”
Cardinal Cañizares with Pope Benedict XVI

Cardinal Cañizares explains why he agreed to preside over Saturday’s mass for faithful from the “Una cuм Papa nostro” pilgrimage, in St. Peter’s Basilica

“I gladly accepted to celebrate next Saturday’s mass for pilgrims who came to thank the Pope for the gift of the motu proprio Summorum Pontificuм because it is a way to make others understand that it is normal to use the extraordinary form of the Roman Rite…” This was the answer Cardinal Antonio Cañizares Llovera, Prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship, gave to Vatican Insider when asked about the meaning of next Saturday’s (3 November) mass which will be celebrated at 15:00 in St. Peter’s Basilica. This morning, the spokesman for the “Una cuм Papa nostro” pilgrimage announced that Archbishop Augustine Di Noia, Vice President of Pontifical Commission Ecclesia Dei will be present at the mass.

What is the point of the pilgrimage?

“To give thanks to God and thank the Pope for the motu proprio he issued five years ago, recognising the value of the liturgy celebrated according to the missal of the Blessed John XXIII and marking continuity with the tradition of the Roman Rite. By recognising the previous liturgy one understands that reform does not mean doing away with older traditional practices.”

Why did you agree to celebrate mass for pilgrims who follow the pre-conciliar Rite?

I agreed because it is a way to show people it is normal to use the 1962 missal: there are two forms of the same Rite but there is only one Rite, so it is normal to use it during mass celebrations. I have already celebrated a number of masses according to the missal introduced by the Blessed John XXIII and I will gladly do so again on this occasion. The Congregation in which the Pope has called me to act as Prefect does not oppose the use of the old liturgy, although the task of our dicastery is to enhance the meaning of liturgical renewal according to the directives of the Sacrosanctum Concilium constitution and follow in the footsteps of the Second Vatican Council. In relation to this it must be said that the extraordinary form of the Latin Rite must draw inspiration from the conciliar Constitution which in the first ten paragraphs focuses on the true spirit of the liturgy and so is relevant to all rites.”

What is your opinion regarding the implementation of the motu proprio Summorum Pontificuм, five years on?

“I do not know the details regarding the world situation, partly because it is the Ecclesia Dei Commission that deals with this but I think that people are gradually beginning to understand that the liturgy is core to the Church and we have to revive the sense of mystery and sacredness in our celebrations. Furthermore, I believe that five years on we are able to better understand that it is not just about some faithful feeling nostalgia for the Latin Rite but about adding to the meaning of the liturgy. We are all part of the Church, we are all in one communion. Pope Benedict XVI explained this very well and on the first anniversary of the motu proprio, he recalled that “no one is unwelcome in the Church.”

  • Well, it would show that it is even more normal if the Pope celebrated such a Mass...
Stir up within Thy Church, we beseech Thee, O Lord, the Spirit with which blessed Josaphat, Thy Martyr and Bishop, was filled, when he laid down his life for his sheep: so that, through his intercession, we too may be moved and strengthen by the same Spir

I'm sorry, but this strikes me as extremely arrogant!

The Mass codified by Pope St. Pius V needs "inspiration"????

  • Positive Doubt Again!

Sub-Deacon Cañizares Llovera was "ordained" a "priest" 21 Jun 1970 in the new Bugnini rites and "ordained" a "bishop" 25 Apr 1992 in the same dubious rites.

We can be certain that he can at least fill the office of Sub-Deacon at Mass, but the role of Priest...  unlikely.

Unless of course he was conditionally ordained.

What Cardinal Cañizares is saying is that although the Congregation "does not oppose" the use of the 1962 Missal, their "task" is to bring it into conformity with Summorum Pontificuм and Universae Ecclesiae which now regulate the use of the 1962 Missal. In short, to use it as a means to bring about their so eagerly awaited "reform of the reform". There are communities dedicated to this very "task", I have given their links this past year.

The reason I posted this article is because the "1962 Missal" about to be offered on November 3th, has to be the "New 1962" missal, perhaps its inauguration. There is a Motu Proprio coming soon which will address the use of this missal which will be in effect by the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul, June 29th, 2013. The first edition of the "reform of the reform" yet to be 'perfected' until they arrive at the 'ideal' mass that VII intended.

Rome has always considered the 1962 Missal as an indult, that is why they give the regulations for it. Summorum Pontificuм, praised by +Fellay was more restrictive than any other indult because it demands the acceptance of the N.O. (which was not the case before) at least "in principle", but in reality it is an absolute condition if you want to do the 1962 Missal. The SSPX has accepted this indult (under +Fellay), which has been a trap from its making to bring the SSPX into the "reform of the reform". +Fellay has to have known this because he has accepted the H of C of BXVI. This notion that the "New Evangelization" is to bring back Tradition is quite the opposite. Rome only brought back the 1962 Missal to give it a proper burial. The SSPX thinks they can continue using the soon to be obsolete Missal. They are in for a rude awakening.

Take a look at this article from 2009. I'll paste the whole thing for your benefit:

    URGENT
The "Reform of the Reform" is in motion

In today's edition of Italian daily Il Giornale, religious journalist Andrea Tornielli brings the news that several "propositiones" approved by the plenary of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments (reserved session held on March 12, 2009) regarding several reforms of the new Mass of Paul VI. Full translation below:

ROME The docuмent was delivered to the hands of Benedict XVI in the morning of last April 4 by Spanish Cardinal Antonio Cañizares Llovera, Prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship. It is the result of a reserved vote, which took place on March 12, in the course of a "plenary" session of the dicastery responsible for the liturgy, and it represents the first concrete step towards that "reform of the reform" often desired by Pope Ratzinger. The Cardinals and Bishops members of the Congregation voted almost unanimously in favor of a greater sacrality of the rite, of the recovery of the sense of eucharistic worship, of the recovery of the Latin language in the celebration, and of the remaking of the introductory parts of the Missal in order to put a stop to abuses, wild experimentations, and inappropriate creativity. They have also declared themselves favorable to reaffirm that the usual way of receiving Communion according to the norms is not on the hand, but in the mouth. There is, it is true, and indult which, on request of the [local] episcopates, allows for the distribution of the host [sic] also on the palm of the hand, but this must remain an extraordinary fact. The "Liturgy Minister" of Pope Ratzinger, Cañizares, is also having studies made on the possibility to recover the orientation towards the Orient of the celebrant, at least at the moment of the eucharistic consecration, as it happened in practice before the reform, when both the faithful and the priest faced towards the Cross and the priest therefore turned his back to the assembly.

Those who know Cardinal Cañizares, nicknamed "the small Ratzinger" before his removal to Rome, know that he is disposed to move forward decisively with the project, beginning in fact from what was established by the Second Vatican Council in the liturgical constitution Sacrosanctum Concilium, which was, in reality, exceeded by the post-Conciliar reform which came into forceat the end of the Sixties. The porporato, interviewed by monthly 30Days in recent months, had declared regarding this: "At times change was for the mere sake of changing from a past perceived as negative and outdated. Sometimes the reform was regarded as a break and not as an organic development of Tradition."

For this reason, the "propositiones" voted by the Cardinals and Bishops at the March plenary foresee a return to the sense of sacredness and to adoration, but also a recovery of the celebrations in Latin in the dioceses, at least in the main solemnities, as well as the publication of bilingual Missals - a request made at his time by Paul VI - with the Latin text first.

The proposals of the Congregation, which Cañizares delivered to the Pope, obtaining his approval, are perfectly in line with the idea often expressed by Joseph Ratzinger when he was still a Cardinal, as it is made clear his unpublished words on the liturgy, revealed in advanced by Il Giornale yesterday, and which will be published in the book Davanti al Protagonista (Cantagalli [publisher]), presented beforehand at a congress in Rimini. With a significant nota bene: for the accomplishment of the "reform of the reform", many years will be necessary. The Pope is convinced that hasty steps, as well as to simply drop directives from above, serve no good, with the risk that they may later remain a dead letter. The style of Ratzinger is that of comparison and, above all, of example. As the fact that, for more than a year, whoever approaches the Pope for Communion, have had to kneel down on the kneeler especially placed by the cerimonieri.

RORATE note: The Pope needed, for practical purposes, this first bureaucratic step by the Congregation for Divine Worship. His decisions on this matter will come in the next few months and years. May God grant him many more fruitful years of work as Successor of Peter.

  • For the typical Novus Ordoite the reform of the reform is a huge step in the right direction, therefore, except for the few trads, which represent numerically speaking, maybe 0.002% of Catholics, this news is good.

For traditionalists, however, this change should be a non-event, something to be avoided, for all it is, is 1962 all over again. We've been there and done that. Hopefully this time, there will be enough just people in "Sodom & Gommorah", to change the results this time.
