  • I'll be at the Consecration with my son. We'll be staying in the main hotel (Quality Inn Tysons Corner).

This is the thread where we can post that we're going to be attending, pictures, invitations to PM each other to meet up while we're there, etc.

Here is the thread with information about the Consecration:

  • If anyone wants to print out some CathInfo logos, to put on your hotel room door, etc. (like a Do Not Disturb sign, only the opposite -- it's a subtle sign which says to those in-the-know, "I'm looking to meet and chat with other Traditional Catholics during this little vacation I'm on.")

    http://www.cathinfo.com/cathinfo.htm

Outline font version, so you can color the blue "C" in with a marker:
    (for those without color printers)
    http://www.cathinfo.com/cathinfo-outline.htm

It would help if you had a color printer, so you can get the nice blue-and-black logo.

Think of it as the "square and compass" Freemasonic symbol, only for Traditional Catholics. Or a secret handshake of sorts.

Of course you could achieve the same thing with a religious picture, picture of a medal, picture of a scapular, etc. but I'm just giving you options...hahaha.

Tape one to your luggage (so we'll recognize each other even at the airport! Maybe we can help each other and stuff...)

I'm just crazy enough that I might do this myself. I just have to get to a color printer between now and then. So there will be at least one of these symbols on a hotel door.

  • On a more serious note, my son and I will be heading in to Washington, DC on Wednesday morning for some sightseeing. We're arriving Tuesday afternoon (over a day early) for this purpose.

We're going to see things like the National Museums, take some pictures of the major landmarks either in the distance or close-up, etc. Most of it is free -- at least that's the stuff we'll be seeing.

The only thing I've crossed off as a possibility is the h0Ɩ0cαųst Museum. If you want to see that, you can't join our party. hahaha  And I probably will skip the Art museum as well. There's just too much to see, and only one day to see it.

We might also have time Thurs/Fri afternoon/evening to visit various people, places and things. We're going back on Saturday afternoon.

  • I like the idea of the sticker/sign template you have there! If I can get a couple printed I might even tape one to my shirt too!

  • Thank you for the reminder, Bumphrey. However, just because you see one person with the logo does not mean it is me (remember, I said "IF it could be printed"). Besides, if some-one tried messing with me they may regret it... in more ways then one! Hahaha!

Thanks for the advice for cowards, but it doesn't apply to me.

Especially since there's nothing to be afraid of. The only people in the universe that would even recognize the square "CI" logo would be TRADITIONAL CATHOLICS WHO USE FORUMS. Not exactly the majority of the population. There is even a huge swath of Traditional Catholics who don't ever look at CathInfo (too young, too old, aloof from the Internet, aloof from forums, Religious, some sedevacantists, most Indulters, anti-social types, etc.)

Note that I didn't suggest printing out the site header (the rectangular "CathInfo.com" at the top of the page). Anyone could type that into their phone/tablet and see what it's all about. Perhaps then you'd get a few hecklers. But most people aren't going to recognize the logo UNLESS they're in the Inner Circle, one of the enlightened ("illuminati", as it were), the cognoscenti, they have hidden knowledge of spiritual mysteries (gnosis)...you get the idea.

  • It still looks a tad wet for the days immediately following the Consecration, or about 2/5 of my upcoming trip to Vienna, VA.

The weather is a good 20 to 25 degrees (F) cooler than my part of Texas -- that's nice.

Good grief, oh exalted admin, who now confesses an episode of being "crazy enough"!   Just quickly redo the C.I. logo with an outline type-face for the ‘C’,  then repost it!  That would give interested people the low-tech option of coloring it in with a blue "magic marker".   Or maybe even to signify that they're the proud parents of young children, by coloring it in with blue crayon.

Neither innocent cyan or magenta toner, nor the corresponding ink, nor any spot color, was exploited in posting this message.

  • Great idea --

Here is an outline font version, so you can color in the blue "C" with a marker:

"National Museums"--plural !?  Ha, ha!  Hahaha!  Hahahahahahaha!  Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!

You silly, silly person!  You can't "see" more than 1 of the Smithsonian Museums in 1 day--not without feeling an intense sense of regret that you missed more than you saw!  Be that as it may:

    •   <https://www.si.edu/visit/>.
    •   <https://www.si.edu/visit/floorplans>.

The latter URL includes a small map (with a link to a PDF) that reveals a modern bonus: There are now 8 Metro stations in & around the National Mall, not just the 1 that I identified in a previous posting.  Note esp. the "Smithsonian (Mall Exit)" on the E.-W. axis thro' the Capitol and G.W. Monument (spanning a trifle more than 1 mile).

Just as a guess, my recommendation would have you starting with the American History Museum:
    •   <http://americanhistory.si.edu/>.

It's biiig, so it might be prudent to prepare yourself and your son, in advance, emotionally, for wanting to see still more inside when the guards are ushering you out into the warm evening air of the approaching D.C. summer[¢].

Ohhh [exxxpletives deleted] !  Being the detail-oriented guy I am, I just checked:

    Quote from: americanhistory.si.edu/visit/hours
The Museum is open 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. every day except December 25.  Admission is always free and no tickets are required.  The schedule is subject to change so please check our website for the latest information. [†]

It's the American History Museum that has the Computer History Collection.  Altho' the Smithsonian Web page's persistent use of past tense makes me verrry uncomfortable in recommending that Collection specifically, out of fear that everything computerish might have been stowed away, out of view of visitors (but that would be sooo unSmithsonian).
    •   <http://americanhistory.si.edu/comphist/>.

I see that the [Industrial] Arts & Industries Building is closed for renovation withf apparently unscheduled completion.  A pity.   It was once had seniority as the "Old National Museum" (1881),  and now has that appealing 19th Century character that's so well suited to a museum whose name reminds me of "Decimal System" Dewey trying to organize all the knowledge of his time.[×]
    •   <https://www.si.edu/museums/arts-and-industries-building>.

    -------
Note ¢: Ooops.  Forecast highs ~70°F!?   I coulda swored it was usually warmer than that--it's likely Finals Week for 1 or more local universities.  But it might not matter to you at all, because I suspect that the 1 that's probably still most populous: U.Md., is even more of a commuter school than decades ago, and it's more than 90° clockwise around the Beltway (i.e.: College Park, off U.S. 1) from Vienna or Tyson's Corner.

Note †: Sigh!   My apologies for being the bearer of unpleasant news.  I had already written in early lines of my draft reply: "For your sake, I hope they're already on their summer hours; their 5 p.m. winter closings were real downers.  So nowadays, there's no longer any seasonal difference.  Bummer.

Note ×: I surely hope that its management hasn't engaged some Novus Ordo Philistine architect who routinely performs wreckovations.  But I digress.

  • In case this might be helpful to anyone, my DC friend sent me this run-down of a few choices of things to do for 1 day (or 2) in DC.

She also mentioned that the EU embassies are having open houses next Saturday, if anyone is still in town by then.

    Quote
There are so many fun (and free things) to do in DC!  Here are a few suggestions.

    • National Archives (where I work so it goes first)  Open 10:00-5:30... have to be in by 5:00.. see the Declaration, Constitution, Bill of Rights, Magna Carta and much more! Entrance on Constitution Avenue near 9th. The Natural History museum and National Gallery of Art are right next door.
    • National Museum of Natural History- Open 10:00-5:30... have to be in by 5:00.  See everything from the Hope Diamond, to the butterfly room, to mummies and more!  The entrance is on Constitution Ave & 10th st.
    • National Air and Space Museum- Open 10:00-5:30... look through the solar telescopes if it isn't cloudy on Independence avenue near 5th street, see an exhibit about time and navigation, astronomy, the wright brothers, and lots lots more.  This is near the National Museum of the American Indian and Hirshhone Art Museum.
    • Monuments on the mall- open 24 hours a day.... To see them all you can do a big loop.  Get off at the Smithsonian metro stop and see the Washington Monument (you can't go in right now cause the elevator is broken), then to WWII, Vietnam, Lincoln, Korea, MLK, FDR, and Jefferson.  These are good to do at the end of the day or the beginning when the museums are closed.
    • The Supreme Court, capitol visitor center, Capitol and Library of Congress and close together and pretty fun as well.  Those three could be a day by themselves.  The Supreme Court is open 9:00-5:00(stop letting people in at 4:30), the Capitol and its visitor center is 8:30-4:30, LOC is open 9:30-4:00

This is more than they could possibly do in a day.  I am happy to give other suggestions if you are interested in other places.. The postal museum is one of my favorite museums... but I'm not sure how much they like mail and stamps. :-)  The zoo is another favorite of mine.
*It seems the bullet points don't work. I think we're overdue in needling the people who wrote this posting plug-in.

  • I will not see any of you guys at the hotels since I am staying with a friend who is 30 minutes away and may need a ride to Mass.

But, I will be there for both luncheons on Thursday and Friday.   :)

Oh, and anyone who plays an instrument should try and bring it for the picnic on Friday!  We want to make this a festive event for everyone to remember!  I am planning to bring my violin and mandolin, and one of my choir members plans to bring his accordion.   ;D

  • I'll bring the instrument I play, all right -- the human voicebox. I'm a vocalist. I'm your garden variety "Irish tenor".

My son plays the organ, but he's not even packing his smaller "travel" organ.  Since we're flying, we're trying to travel light. Besides, organ doesn't fit in to an outdoor, fiddle/guitar/banjo/mandolin/tin whistle/accordion dancing music ensemble.

What songs are you likely to play? Irish folk songs? Other folk songs?
