I looked up the Basilica and thought you could get there by Metro. If that's not true, I should probably let Matthew know. My online research (not always the most reliable) said there was a Metro stop 0.4 miles away.
There is a metro stop close to the chapel, but I am not sure if it goes all the way to the Basilica...
I am not too familiar with the D.C. area though, and put this here because a friend of mine asked me to post the the information for them...
I just looked the area up, and is seems that the Basilica it is about a half hour walk from the metro.  So, as long as they are good with that it should not be too bad.   :)

I looked just now at Google maps and it's not very far from the Metro at all ... about 1/4 of a mile mostly walking along a street through the University. In fact, you can see a good number of people on the Google street view walking back and forth down that street.

You can get to the Basilica by Metro. The Brookland/CUA stop is the stop that one would want. It is a three minute walk to the Basilica. The Catholic Univ. of America will be having graduation ceremonies May 12 and May 13 so it would be best to visit the Shrine before or after these dates.

Well, I apologize for any confusion...   :-[  I am glad that it is all cleared up...   :)

By the way, for those interested, here is a link to the Cristeros hymn which I believe Student of Qi was talking about:
