    Dedication scheduled for July 25

In Madrid, the capital of Spain, the Society of St. Pius X spent the last few years building a new church. The building has now been completed, and the solemn dedication ceremony is scheduled for this coming Monday, July 25, which coincides with the parish’s titular feast, for the church is dedicated to St. James the Greater, Apostle.
Normally, none of this would be news, for the SSPX builds new parish churches around the globe all the time. The case of St. James the Apostle Church in Madrid, however, is different, because the exterior of the now-completed building is so hideous that it might as well be a Novus Ordo church. One may also easily mistake it for an office building, a library, or worse.
Here are a few sample pictures of this monstrosity (click each photo to enlarge). Make no mistake about it, this church is no longer under construction — it’s done!

The outer facade facing the main road

    Another view of the same

The SSPX logo is plastered all over the outer wall

These interesting windows face a side street

    A wider view

    A view from the corner

You can check this out for yourself. Simply go to Google Maps and use Street View for the following address: Calle de Catalina Suárez, 16, 28007 Madrid, Spain.
By the way, did you notice the odd-looking statue at the top of the building? Here is a close-up:

What is this? The Grim Reaper? Actually, it is supposed to be the Blessed Virgin Mary, to whom the SSPX claims to be especially devoted. Here is a closer view still:

No eyes, no mouth, and just a hideous overall appearance. How much this must have cost? Or perhaps it was a gift from the local Masonic Lodge?
Lots more photos of the church, both during and after construction, can be found at the following links:

Bp. Alfonso de Galarreta is the District Superior for Spain and Portugal and will presumably be the celebrant for the dedication on July 25. No doubt we will get plenty more photos in a few days.
Not much commentary is needed here. It seems that in Madrid the Lefebvrians are trying to out-Novus-Ordo the Novus Ordo, at least as far as exterior church architecture goes. No doubt, with this new Capilla de Santiago Apóstol — Chapel of St. James the Apostle — the SSPX will be yet another step closer to being fully accepted by Modernist Rome. At this point, the writing is, even quite literally, on the wall.

  • Luciferian with the irreverent, diluted, ambiguous statue and the aesthetic emphasis on triangles /pyramids with the facade of beams on the roof. The large circled window also represents the eye of false deity Horus or the "all seeing eye". It also represents "illumination".

    Plum ugly building.

  • That horror seems like a typical design of Jєωs, with its characteristic ugliness and emptiness, lacking all Christian beauty or reverence and running opposite to the Catholic spirit of order and magnificence. This ugliness of modern Jєωιѕн art and architecture is found everywhere nowadays. It is overwhelming.
If anyone says that true and natural water is not necessary for baptism and thus twists into some metaphor the words of our Lord Jesus Christ" Unless a man be born again of water and the Holy Spirit" (Jn 3:5) let him be anathema.

  • Much of the art today is plain ugly.  Looks like a slap stick job.

I remember attending an art festival many years ago where the
    public can vote.
The picture that won first prize of $1000.00 turned out that a bucket
of mixed paint was thrown on a canvas by a child.
Absolutely no taste and no appreciation for true talented art.

I'll bite: the inside is not that bad. I've seen pre-Vatican II churches that look like that.

  • Not just commercially, but among parishioners, skills certainly do exist. For example, the FSSP church in Phoenix—an ex-Baptist, Catholicized church—was renovated in large part by a good fraction of artistic parishioners.

    Before renovation:

    After renovation:

    (images courtesy NLM)

All the painting and wallpapering in the sanctuary was done by artistic parishioners. The St. Mary and Joseph status were sculpted and painted by a single parishioner. The tabernacle was built by the priest. The "marble" is really wood that parishioners painted to look like marble. The arch, which has the words of the Mater Misericordiæ prayer (partially seen in the image above), was traced by using an overhead projector and painstakingly painted by a few parishioners.

This all took less than a year. It really shows what can be done with parishioner involvement and not just some "firms."

  • This Madrid SSPX church clearly wasn't designed by a Catholic architect like Duncan Stroik.

  • A confusing building indicative of the organisation and the religion it promotes. The best interpretation we can make is that the brand has now been packaged and is ready for marketing as a 'fast food' solution for busy apartment dwellers wanting a little updated nostalgia. What is missing is a Starbucks refreshment concession.

The Society has never been big on architectural taste; too much time has been spent in make-shift buildings and hotels, even tents, that is has forgotten what old churches looked like. I know some of the older generation were shocked at what had become of the 'house of God' in the hands of the Society and had decided to give it a miss. Crude minimalism was not for them; the psychological adjustment was just too great to make.

If form follows function in this case, then I expect the expanse of tradition is being trimmed down to suit the modern age and no doubt the current management will be congratulating themselves in stealing a march on their rivals on how to deal with the redundancy of the old. My reaction is to rush back to those cathedrals and churches that have not been mutilated and ignore the rubbish that is going on inside!

  • This was the site of the pharmacy donated to the SSPX. Many of the neighbours are hostile. The City Council is divided between the Opus Dei controlled PP and leftists who detest the faith. This pompous insurance company look was probably what was needed to get the structure built. Now, I've read many locally who hear Mass at an SSPX chapel are fairly unhappy, there is a promise to fix it. The external frame could have supported a nice Neo-Classical style. That might not have been possible. At least the statue should be fixed.

This "Church" (and I use that term loosely) is an abject monstrosity that all Catholics with well-formed minds should instinctively, and rightly, recoil from in horror!

If one was not sure that the SSPX is truly dead, look no further than this for the evidence. This Church would fit right in with Roger Mahony's monstrosity in Los Angeles.
