The old spiritual masters had a saying: " Age quod acis ", which could be paraphrased: "Be where you are, and not elsewhere, do what you do, and not anything else, what you have to do, that you alone can do. " On the contrary, modern man is never where he is, he is elsewhere, in the past or the future, dream or distraction. A Christian must therefore have at heart to return to reality.
First of all, we must live to the rhythm of Providence, which protects us every day. We must reasonably think the next day, not to panic over what could possibly happen in an imaginary future. There are people who anticipate catastrophes, wars, persecutions, even the end of the world.And who, in the meantime, are relieved of their modest duty of state.
The media, for their part, tell us about dramatic and horrific realities, but they are taking place in Tibet, Somalia or Alaska. Of course, the misfortunes of others move us: but can we bring to ourselves the misfortune of the world? Is not the most reasonable way of combating misery, first of all, to concern ourselves with the one at our door, the misery which God has entrusted to us, since it has given us birth here in France?
Social networks rumble about the crisis of the Church. We want to know everything that happens in such a distant chapel, an unknown parish. Any act of any ecclesiastic is now commented, judged, condemned. The surfer becomes a police officer, a prosecutor, a judge, on the basis of unverifiable rumors, phrases out of context and peremptory statements.
Has the Holy Spirit commissioned us to fill the holy office of the Roman and universal Inquisition? Have we received a divine mission to convert the Pope, the Roman Curia, the bishops? Are we entrusted by Heaven to deal with the internal affairs of the Society of St. Pius X and each of the chapels of Tradition? In truth, God entrusted us with a spiritual, real and not fictitious burden: that of watching with grace our own salvation, that of our family, that of contributing, according to our status, to the improvement of the spiritual life of the place where we lead our Christian life. And if each of us did so, the families of the Tradition would become more faithful to God every day, our priories and chapels would be centers of faith and charity, each contributing, according to the plans of Providence, to the renovation of the Church.
The return to reality passes above all through supernatural hope. It is true that, apart from the Church, nothing and no one already has the certainty of salvation or of permanence on this earth: "Let him who believes he is standing be careful not to fall," St. Paul tells us 1 Cor 10:12 ). It would in itself be possible for the Society of St. Pius X to join the worst mistakes of modernism. It would be in itself possible for the most zealous traditional priest, the most persevering faithful to abandon the struggle, to desert Tradition, the apostasy of the true faith. This is always possible in itself, because man is fragile and changing. But does this mean that such a disaster will happen? No. "God does not die," said Garcia Moreno . The Lord is there, watching over each one of us, watching over the Fraternity of St. Pius X, watching over Tradition, watching over the Church. Even if we undergo a terrible crisis, the good God has not abandoned us, his powerful grace does not fail to help us.
The return to reality is thus identified with the will to fulfill our daily duty of state, where the Lord has placed us, without letting ourselves be deceived by these electronic means which give us a fallacious gift of ubiquity. Moreover, the return to reality coincides with the supernatural hope that God will give us every day his grace and protection and, because we have made good use of these means, the heavenly reward in Paradise.
