  • Matthew-  I'm not blaming you for small turnout.  You are right about most of the people diving out the windows while the candles are still lit!  Don't feel bad.  If New York City doesn't have a Resistance chapel, why should San Antonio?  Actually, the places with better established chapels are rural.  NYC is not a place conducive to raising Catholic children--or even having children for that matter!  At my SSPX chapel, I am sum-total of the "Resistance."  Yet Fr. warns, "It's coming here!"  ?????????
St. Francis Xavier threw a Crucifix into the sea, at once calming the waves.  Upon reaching the shore, the Crucifix was returned to him by a crab with a curious cross pattern on its shell.

New York City doesn't deserve a resistance chapel. At the SSPX chapel in Manhattan, we are lucky to get thirty people. I don't know how many people there support the resistance because I haven't talked to many people about it.
    R.I.P.
Please pray for the repose of my soul.

May I help with a translation?  You say Fr. warns, "It's coming here,"
but what it would seem he's thinking may be "SHE is coming here."

    SHE means Frances, BTW.

If I were you, I would lay low, and have nice conversations with
various nice people about Church DOCTRINE.  Stick to doctrine,
but don't use the word, "doctrine" very often.

I would take the AFD, for example, and the rebuttals to it, and
make a list of the doctrinal principles, and talk to people about
those principles, WITHOUT MENTIONING THE AFD!!

Only after they hear about the truth over and over will they be
able to GENTLY take the next step to recognizing when those
principles are attacked.  Only THEN, once they have shown the
ability to conceptualize principles can you expect them to
recognize the fact that HEBF has done an about-face on principle.

Note that we don't have a priory here or anything like that. The SSPX doesn't have that big of a chapel here, despite being in one of the top 10 largest cities. Percentage wise, we're doing average to above-average.

The problem is, out of the 200 (?) people listed in the chapel directory, many of them are inaccessible. They disappear immediately after Mass without talking to anyone. I guess I could always put flyers on windshields :)
But would any of these people (who dive out the windows like the hero of an action movie, while the altar candles are still lit) respond favorably to an invitation anyhow?

And even if I were a bit too shy, the few people I don't talk to might talk to one of the EXISTING "pro-Resistance" folks. That's how a few members joined our group.

What would these people "who dive out the windows while the altar
    candles are still lit"
do, when it takes 15 minutes to reach the top
of the candles?   Would they maybe use the doorways at Chartres
instead of the windows? -- since they have so much more time, that is:

                               (liturgical color here?  green!!)
(and for you Star Wars fans:  No, the tabernacle is not a French C3P0!)

Note:  If they "dove out the windows" at Chartres Cathedral, they
might be arrested, because the stained glass there is the most
ancient original stained glass windows in the whole world.  Just a
    little something to think about...........
Hey, maybe Father could use that in his sermon next time!!!      :cowboy:

I recorded the sermon on video (using my tablet). I'm going to look it over, and hopefully upload it to Youtube.

I got some catching up to do first, though. I want to keep my job and all :)

Many thanks to you, Matthew for the recording.

    God bless you!   :cowboy:

It was a priest who said the Novus Ordo who said this to me.

In theory, yes, but alas, such a concept is WAY over the heads of most of the parishioners! They can't even begin to conceptualize what you are trying to tell them, let alone make an intelligent response. As one (female) parishioner responded recently, "I just want the Mass and the sacraments, not all that political stuff". What it signifies is that they don't know enough about their Faith to carry on a discussion or even have a conversation.

  • I first thought that the less than stellar support at our resistance Mass was do to short notice.  However, even with weeks of advance notice, folks who always said they wanted to come didn't. This was very disappointing on so many levels.

They say in the 1970's less than 10% held true to Tradition. Can we expect resistance numbers to be better?  We advertised on the Internet and even mailed personal invitations and yet the turnout was no different than previous Masses.

Ultimately, the crisis in Tradition is a microcsm of the Vatican II crisis.  Probably only about 10% will support the resistance fully while others will come and go until the novelty wares off.  Then you won't see them anymore.

A long time ago I heard Bishop Williamson speak.  He said Catholicism tends run a certain course.  First you have the true Catholics. Those who have been fed with good, nourishing doctrine.  These Catholics often suffered for the faith through wars and persecutions. Second,  you have their children.  They love the faith because their parents did.  They were fed some doctrine, but never had to defend this doctrine.  The third generation inherited the love for religious things but were not fed doctrine.  This love had no foundation and so was twisted and turned with every human emotion.  The fourth generation received no doctrine, saw a love for Catholic things that was easily changed with each passing emotion and so, they only have a "respect " for Catholic things.  They are "spiritual ".  Their Catholocism is only as deep as the respect they have for their parents.

I believe from the amount of time that has passed since the initial onslaught of Vatican II and things witnessed in my own family and in my SSPX chapel, that tradition is embarking on the third generation.   By the way the teens and early twenty somethings conduct themselves it is obvious that their belief in Catholic doctrine is wanting.  As was discussed in a previous thread,  modesty has been falling short at the local SSPX chapel and other than a few reminders in the weekly bulletin, this immodesty is never addressed head on.

I believe unless the SSPX does something extreme, the numbers of those attending resistance Masses will only grow organically from within.   Those in the SSPX will continue to be lulled to complaisantsy.

Do you want to see their eyes glaze over? Want to see their eyebrows start to twitch? Want to see their palms get sweaty, their face turn pale, their furtive glance for the kids they have been ignoring for an hour, suddenly they blurt out:  "johnny, get over here, now!"

What's happened is you 've  started to talk to them about DOCTRINE! They heard about you! They are furtively looking for a coffee, a tea, a drink even! "where is Father?", you can see them think. "Oh dear Lord, this must be a resistance nut-- because nobody else knows anything about
Doctrine!"; " Where is Father ? Where is my wife? Alex, I need a lifeline!"

True story: when Bishop Williamson came to Ridgefield recently, some six months AFTER Fellay expelled him, we invited parishioners to the confirmations and the conference . Quite a few attended, who had not been at any "Resistance" Mass. At the conference was the first time they had even heard that Bp. Williamson was expelled!!
Thats how much they pay attention! And for a few of them, the very first thing they did is run back to Ridgefield to get the "party line."
Unfortunately, we have to fight through Catholics who are now comfortable,
they are tired of being outside, and they want to be lied to.

I confirm the part about people at the Confirmations/Conference not knowing that Bp. W. had been expelled by the SSPX, or that anything was amiss.  I met four such persons.
I met one person who had no idea, "Who IS that bishop?"
