Though it is a massive amount of information it may have led people away from the True Faith putting them on an endless intellectual journey. Raymond Brown was big at the time. Twenty years later or so the "New Jerome Biblical Commentary" came out and this time there were Protestant Authors added.
Was all this due to Vatican II and perhaps it was not a good idea?
The
Jerome Biblical Commentary is a modernist work, but it is only coincidental that it was published post-Vatican II. The groundwork for the commentary was initiated before Roncalli even announced his plans to convene a general council. The American-originating JBC is more the fruit of modernist biblical scholarship that came to dominate Catholic institutions in the late 1940s and 1950s as a result of Pacelli's
Divino afflante Spiritu (1943) on scripture studies in the higher institutions of learning. The milieu of Vatcan II certainly promoted what is found in the JBC as well as similar commentaries from the same period produced in the other major European languages.
