I am having a very strict Lent this year.

Something in my soul tells me this might be one of the last chances to give something up while you still have something up to give.

Lent used to be stricter a long time ago. Some of the Orthodox still follow stricter fasts with things like not eating oil or dairy or eggs or fish in addition to not eating meats and fasting for almost half the days in the year.
It's often claimed that Lent was stricter in the past, and while certain particular fasts were stricter (i.e. Black Fast), I'm not so sure it was really stricter so much as structured differently. Many of the changes and "loosening" of fasting practices has more to do with the advancement and adjustment to the manor system or manorialism.

This is what I was curious about, we always broke the Lenten Fast at noon on Holy Saturday - glad it's from the old code...

Quote
On Sundays or feasts of precept, the laws of abstinence and of fast cease, except for feasts during Lent, nor are vigils anticipated; likewise, it ceases on Holy Saturday afternoon.

The 1983 Code of Canon Law requires fasting starting at 18 years of age.  Therefore, this must be adhered to if one accepts that John Paul II was a true pope.
