Tower of Babel has always intrigued me.  What were they actually building that they thought they could reach heaven with it?  These weren't stupid people, and certainly they must have realized that it was not possible with a normal building to get that high.  Or perhaps they did devise some architectural plan that they believed would allow them to get up there.  Of course, none of it makes any sense if in fact "heaven" is really the vacuum of space.  And God struck down the tower while stating (according to Genesis) that they would not give up until they had in fact accomplished what they had set out to do.

They probably wouldn't have made it past Mt Everest, which is far from the vacuum of space.

I don't know that they would have made it that far, unless there was something else here other than a brick-and-mortal building.  I'm really not sure what their intentions were.  Perhaps they had such arrogant confidence in their ability to build things, that in their hubris they fancied that they would complete the task ...

But Sacred Scripture implies that God took action because He believed that they were capable of accomplishing whatever it is that they had set out to do.

Genesis 11: 5-6
Quote
And the Lord came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of Adam were building.  And he said: Behold, it is one people, and all have one tongue: and they have begun to do this, neither will they leave off from their designs, till they accomplish them in deed.
