  • I have some very poor experiences with the younger generation of SSPX priest in terms of their apostolic zeal (or lack thereof).  So, there was one time I went to an SSPX chapel early before Mass for Confessions, and got to the front of the line (this was about 50 minutes before scheduled Mass).  As I was walking in, this (younger) SSPX priest was literally just socializing in the parking lot with some "parishioners" (talking about nothing pastoral in nature ... as I could hear what they were saying).  I stood there for nearly 30 minutes in line, while the line gradually built up and stretched to the front of the chapel.  So the priest finally decides to come in about 20 minutes before Mass, and got maybe halfway through the line before he had to cut it off so he could begin Mass reasonably on time.  So ... how many people there missed being able to receive Holy Communion that day because they couldn't get to Confession before Mass ... all because this priest wanted to get in his social time before Mass?

    Wow.

And you just KNOW that all those people standing in line had *plenty* of time to think about it and remember it. Considerations like yours were probably in the heads of many of those queuing penitents. They certainly noticed, and they will certainly remember it.

Also, some people can get frustrated/impatient in a situation like you describe, depending on their temperament. Don't ask me how I know this ;)

And you know the #1 recipe for remembering something? To have strong emotions associated with it. That's why you remember really good and really bad things that happened to you as a kid.

I have to admit that in situations like that I get somewhat frustrated to the point that I'm fighting to retain the proper dispositions to go to Confession.

You're absolutely right about associations as a kid.  I recall one time when I was at SSPX chapel with my then-7-year-old son and being subjected to a priest's literrally HOUR LONG sermons, probably 95% of which was over my son's head.  I vowed that I would never subject my kids to that again because they're just going to end up hating Traditional Catholicism.  Even the adults were fighting heard not to nod off and were all squiriming in the pews.  Not to mention that I found it disrespectful to the Mass.  By the time we got to the Consecration, we were 90 minutes in, and it was almost anti-climactic and people were tired and wanted to get out of there.

Unfortunately some priests live in their own heads and don't consider the practical impact some of their actions have on the faithful and on children.  He could have given a 15-minute sermon and then offered to have another talk after Mass for those who really wanted to or could stay for it.

Nonsense: If I call a priest for a relation, I have already ascertained he has access to them.
I personally know of situations where a Trad family member called a Trad priest on their own, hoping the sick person would accept them when the priest showed up.  And then the sick person (or the other non-Trad family members, who are usually the majority at the hospital), get into an argument and want "their priest" (i.e. novus ordo).  So the Trad priest shows up for no reason and is asked to leave.  Good intentions but a total waste of time.  And the Trad priest is caught in the middle.

Right.  That's why I went through the criteria one by one.  This is not unreasonable, to make sure the individual would be willing to accept a Traditional priest ... assuming they're conscious.

  • Many years ago my family attended an SSPX mass at Mission Cataldo which was the ending of a pilgrimage.  There were roughly 5 or 6 priests in attendance maybe 400 faithful.  During the picnic the priests sat at a table with a dozen teen girls flirting instead of mingling with the crowd.  I'll never forget it.  And yes Rosty was there.
