  • Confederate is throwing out a red herring. When has a parish church ever had first Vespers? I bet he cannot name a church in Dixie Land that ever had vespers on a Saturday. St. Teresa's father took her to Sunday Vespers on Sunday evening. Some parishes had Sunday vespers. Only in monasteries where the monks are obliged to the office would you find vespers on Saturday. Even then how many of the faithful ever attended? Before the 40 hour week Saturday was a work day.

In the Roman Catholic Church Sunday is on Sunday not Saturday night. We have to keep Sunday holy. Most Catholics consider that if they go to Mass on Sunday they have kept the day holy. Very few would consider Vespers to be required, although it would certainly be better and that is why the Martin family were holy.

  • Nice try but I said quite clearly

As time went on a Catholic rite may have  essentially chosen to 'obligate' a portion of what we must do on Sunday

    What we must do

Because most don't choose to follow the liturgical calendar every day doesn't mean that it isn't observed in monasteries and some churches. Instead of attacking Fr Purdy for suggesting that people make room for others when the church, who lays out Holy Days has suspended the obligation, you want to imagine that he is doing something totally unheard of. All I pointed out is there's nothing wrong with attending what you can, since it's not contrary to the history of the church
