Perhaps, but I had rather thought that it referred to the deplorable physical condition that those who survive the first rounds of the true physical chastisements, be they nuclear or whatever, find themselves in, in much the same way that you hear people say they would rather be dead than suffer greatly from cancer or some such ailment.

Same subject:  it's altogether too easy to see just the physical
aspect of prophesy.  But this world is but an analogy of the
eternal (and therefore the more important) reality.  When a
prophet speaks it isn't just for the here and now.  But words of
infallibility endure forever and ever, et in saecula saeculorum,
Amen.

Certainly it refers to the deplorable physical condition of those
who survive the first rounds -- but what of those whose faith
survives the first rounds of Modernism run amok?  What is a little
"suffering from cancer or such ailment" when compared to eternal
damnation?  Liberalism makes suffering evil -- and that's what our
faithless and adulterous generation teaches us.

"An evil and adulterous generation seeketh a sign : and a sign
shall not be given it, but the sign of Jonas the prophet.  For as
Jonas was in the whale's belly three days and three nights : so
shall the Son of man be in the heart of the earth three days
and three nights.  The men of Ninive shall rise in judgment with
this generation, and shall condemn it because they did penance
at the preaching of Jonas.  And behold a greater than Jonas
here" (Mat. xii. 39-41).


Do you think anyone present at the time had a CLUE
what He was talking about?  "A greater than Jonas
here?!?!"  What -- someone 'here' has been
swallowed by a BIGGER whale??  Or, maybe emerged
from the other end of the whale?!?  "In the heart
of the earth three days?!"  What -- he's going to go
spelunking??  When we chase him out of town he's
going to go hide in a cave?!?  "WHAT!?!"


It's too easy to see just the physical aspect of prophesy.  

Who were the men of Ninive?  They heard the prophesy of
Jonas and they didn't like it (just like we don't like the
prophesy of Our Lady today!), but they did not spurn, deride,
scorn or diminish his words.  They did penance for their sins,
and they repented.  And in the day of Judgment, that dreadful
Day of Wrath (is it any wonder they yanked out the Dies Irae
by the ROOTS from 'Catholic liturgies?'), the men of Ninive shall
rise in judgment with this generation and condemn it.  Where
are they going to arise from?  Perhaps from Purgatory!?  

Imagine having been in Purgatory for 2300 years!  

And a greater than Jonas here:  our age suffers from Modernism,
the Grand Sewer of all heresies.  Those who heard Jonas and did
penance didn't have that problem!  That's why they had ears to
hear, and did penance (like Our Lady taught the 3 shepherd saints
of Fatima).  The 'scribes and Pharisees' kept houses full of 'leaven'
in other neighborhoods!  Our Lord endured His Crown of thorns to
atone for the intellectual sins of men, and Modernism
is certainly that, if it's anything........................
