.

Whether or not a priest's accent allows him to be understandable is practically insignificant compared to the problem of putting CONTROL of the chapel at a point of higher priority than the practice of the Faith, when it is this CONTROL that is being used under the false guise of "obedience" even though it has only to do with political topics, or emotional themes, or subjective interpretation of what little news escapes from what has been going on at the upper levels of management in the Society.

I believe it's important that we learn how to put this into terse language such that when we attempt to explain it, our listeners don't lose sight of the big picture before it even so much as comes into focus for them.

These days Menzingen is all about obfuscation and disguise.

Hide the real issues because then they won't have to answer hard questions.

And when asked, give ambiguous answers or even choose a different question to answer, or even answer as if the question asked was a different one!  Yeah, that's the ticket!  Maybe hide behind a French accent -- could that be one of the reasons to put a priest with a thick French accent in charge, SUCH THAT those who ask him questions will be unable to understand his answers, REGARDLESS of whether or not he actually answers them?

I guess I'm fortunate. Being Canadian, I have very little difficulty understanding someone with a French accent, which is why I couldn't help but laugh when I saw this thread. But I suppose it's true that if you're not used to it, it can be hard to understand.

I know French Canadians that tell me that they don't understand a French priest when he speaks English. I too have the same experience with priests from my second language when they speak English with a bad accent.

When you think about it, most evangelization outside one's native country traditionally must have been carried on in a more or less fractured version of the local language.  Often it was probably by translation.  I don't imagine that St. Augustine of Canterbury knew much if any Anglo-Saxon when he landed in England.

Indeed, in times gone by, the various dialects in a particular country were often mutually incomprehensible, and in some places probably still are.

Fr. Harry Marchosky (RIP), a Jєωιѕн convert and ally of the Society and a very learned man, used to lament the low intellectual quality of traditional discourse in the U.S.

St. Pius X was wont to speak of French Catholics as the tribe of Judah.  I would say the same of the French priests here in the States.

We're lucky to have them, and to have them forming the young American priests; and we faithful are well advised to sit at their feet, fierce accents and all.

There is so much to say regarding this assertion.
