I agree that each seminarian needs his own room. When I was there only a couple brothers (as in, with the same mom & dad) shared a (larger, guest) room.

I couldn't imagine having to share a room with 1, nevermind 2 other seminarians. It would have been a whole different experience.

That having been said... there is more than one way to skin a cat.

What they NEED is more space. What they WANT is a Catholic Disneyland, a Monument (built during time of War = foolishness) and tourist attraction.

You and I both NEED shelter. But we might WANT a 5,000 square foot house with 100 acres of land, horse stables, etc. I can't go in for the latter and claim, "Hey, I need shelter, you know? I'm not avaricious for wanting a roof over my head..."

A roof over your head can cost $60,000, or $6 million -- know what I mean?

They want to leave any vestige of Bishop Williamson behind.

They can't shake free of his ghost in Winona.

  • Every school district and shady salesman, when wanting to sell an unnecessary construction project to replace an old structure (typically to please women), will throw out a bogus estimate of "maintenance" and "upkeep" requirements, which will be grossly exaggerated.  They will speak of the old structure as being dilapidated and unworthy, while representing the new structure as clean and efficient.  They will always say that what is being replaced is falling apart and requires to be systematically rebuilt.  Then they will grossly underestimate the costs of new construction.

It's obvious that the building built during the Real Estate bubble are not going to last like the buildings built in the 19th and early 20th Century.

It's laughable to be talking about "prudence" when some effete-minded architect sketched in the ugly round Disney Towers.

It seems to me that architects know less and less how to build an authentic looking traditional structure.

As they say, modern forgeries that aren't recognized in the time they're made become recognizable down the line because people recognize that the style belong to a certain epoch.

It is amazing how caught up in a certain zeitgeist people can be.  One should never underestimate its effects.

The Virginia location – 700 acres near Charlottesville – assures complete privacy for the new seminary, beautiful mountain views, and excellent weather. In addition, numerous historical and cultural sites in the vicinity will bolster the seminarians’ formation. Traveling to and from the seminary will pose no difficulty thanks to two nearby airports. Also, low property taxes and revenue from the land’s timber resources promise to reduce our demands on the faithful. Finally, our future neighbors are fully supportive of having a Catholic seminary in the area.

In my state, churches exempt from property taxes, I assume it's the same in all states, no?

Timber resources and farming, don't provide much income to the land owners unless you have gazillion acres. You cut them down, and they take 40 years to grow.

There has never before  in the history of the Church been an order of priests that trades the services of a priest for property. Now we know why.The independent chapels would have been better off paying a high salary to a priest rather than turning over their properties to the SSPX.

Seen in the light of the above observation, the SSPX seminary is like  a college that puts out graduates who are exchanged for property, and a life long income stream from donations from those properties. To be precise, one priest graduate can be exchanged for the donation of an independent chapel of say ($600,000 - $2,000,000), and an life long income stream of $100's of thousands (not so much from the basket collection, as from one time large donations, wills, etc. Look at the $80 million donation from the Krah affair).

  • How many times have we heard from the NSSPX that the details of the negotiations with Rome, the new seminary, and just about everything that is done at our chapels is none of our business ?

And yet, would they say and do that, treat us that way, if we owned the chapels? Certainly not.

And there is the answer to the question of why we want to know what they are doing in every detail, why we want transparency, it is because we thought we owned our chapels.

Unfortunately, we own nothing! We are nobodies. And there is the answer to why we are told that " the details of the negotiations with Rome, and just about everything that is done at our chapels is none of our business".

  • And then they make nonsensical statements such as "Good does not make a lot of noise."

As though evil doesn't skulk silently in the shadows.

I also wonder if they will keep the same "sales pitch" of "dilapidated and unworthy" when they go to sell it to a new buyer?
