Communiqué of the General House of the Society of St. Pius X concerning the episcopal consecration of Father Faure.
19-03-2015

On March 19th 2015 Bishop Richard Williamson performed the episcopal consecration of Fr. Jean-Michel Faure at the Benedictine Monastery of the Holy Cross in Nova Friburgo, Brazil.

Bishop Williamson and Fr. Faure have not been members of the Society of St. Pius X since 2012 and 2014, respectively, because of their violent criticisms of any relations with the Roman authorities. According to them, such contacts were incompatible with the apostolic work of Archbishop Lefebvre.

The Society of St. Pius X regrets sincerely that this spirit of opposition has led to an episcopal consecration. In 1988 Archbishop Lefebvre had clearly indicated his intention to consecrate auxiliary bishops who would have no jurisdiction, because of the state of necessity in which the Society of St. Pius X and faithful Catholics found themselves at that time. His sole goal was to make available to the faithful the sacraments which priests ordained by the bishops would offer. After having done everything conceivable to gain permission from the Holy See, Archbishop Lefebvre proceeded with the solemn consecrations on June 30, 1988 before several thousand priests and faithful and hundreds of journalists from around the world. It was abundantly clear from all the circuмstances that, despite the lack of authorization from Rome, this action done in the most public manner was for the good of the Church and of souls.

The Society of St. Pius X denounces this episcopal consecration of Father Faure, which, despite the assertions of both clerics concerned, is not at all comparable to the consecrations of 1988. All the declarations of Bishop Williamson and Fr. Faure prove abundantly that they no longer recognize the Roman authorities, except in a purely rhetorical manner.

The Society of St. Pius X still maintains that the present state of necessity renders legitimate its action throughout the world, without denying the legitimate authority of those for whom it continues to pray at every Mass. The Society intends to continue its work of priestly formation according to its statutes. It has every intention to keep the deposit of the Faith and the purity of the Church’s moral teaching, in opposition to errors, from wherever they may come, in order to pass on such Faith and morals in the traditional liturgy and by preaching, in accordance with the missionary spirit of its founder: Credidimus caritati [1 John 4:16].

Bishop Fellay  is learning the art of hypocrisy from Francis and the Romans.  He does not know when to keep his mouth shut.  In this Communiqué he, "maintains that the present state of necessity renders legitimate (his) actions" while the "state of necessity" does not exist for anyone else.

How is this possible? Because + Fellay is claiming that the SSPX is all that is necessary for any traditional Catholic and therefore no state of necessity exists.  He is in fact claiming "jurisdiction" over traditional Catholics that are not in a regular canonical status!

Who gave it to him?  If it was given by Rome he has taken the 1989 Profession of Faith vowing unconditional submission of the "mind and will" to the personal demands of the pope.  He has then vowed to play the part of the Judas Goat leading traditional Catholic into heresy and the accommodation of error for canonical regularization with Rome.   If it has not been given to him by Rome it proves him a schismatic because he is claiming jurisdiction that he does not possess.

Well said. I had the same thinking when I read peterp's argument yesterday.

Basically, they say that the SSPX got "dibs" on the State of Necessity for Traditional Catholics, and now all of us have to deal with the SSPX or else. If we get on the wrong side of them, get kicked out, etc.? Well, it's just too bad for us!

It also reminds me of Fr. Pfeiffer's belief that he got "dibs" on the non-sedevacantist, Traditional movement (Resistance to modernism) in the United States. If a new priest leaves the SSPX and wants to start a Traditional apostolate in this country, completely opposing Modernism and Vatican II, it's "too bad for him" -- he has to go through Fr. Pfeiffer now. Fr. Pfeiffer marked out the whole territory in 2012, and now all the viable Trad chapel locations are "his" to dispose of as he sees fit. Not so -- who gave him such jurisdiction?

They can jump in the lake.

They're effectively claiming JURISDICTION over Traditional Catholics without using the J word. They want to have their cake and eat it too.

Sorry, but we are not obligated to go through the SSPX, or the SSPX-MC (Pfeiffer Resistance) for that matter. To claim that we do is to literally claim that they have an actual JURISDICTION which is a one-per-church thing. (i.e., only one bishop can claim jurisdiction over the diocese of Paris -- at least within the Catholic Church)

The SSPX is no more "special" than a single independent priest saying Mass in a hotel room in a case of necessity. To think otherwise is to be a fanboy of the SSPX and basically a cult follower.

Too many people think the SSPX is "special". It might be the biggest, or a trad group on steroids, but there is nothing intrinsically or metaphysically different about the group "SSPX" vs. a small group of 20 faithful that have a priest drive out to say Mass in a trailer once a month. The former is just a larger version of the latter.

Moral of the story: Being first, most famous, or largest doesn't give you any special jursidiction or rights over Traditional Catholics.

It's like an immature teenager in the Youtube comments vying to type "FIRST!" in the comments. They get a cheap immature thrill over being the first person to comment on a video.

But most adults realize that such a contest is foolish and immature at best.
