    Quote
*Starting May 7 through September 17 a Weather Blessing will be said at the end of each Low and High Mass. These prayers will replace the ones said at the end of Low Mass. The Weather Blessing is said to ask God for good, prosperous weather for the harvest season and for protection from storms and catastrophes.

I've never encountered this even in a NO church.  Acceptable?  Novelty?

  •

    Where is this??

I could see saying such prayers in addition to the prayers after low Mass, but to replace them?

Complete novelty, and shows no respect for tradition. Quite revealing of the esprit de corps.

  • ... unless there are other prayers said after the usual ones that are being replaced.  That's all I can think of.

If they're removing the customary prayers after Low Mass, I guess they're conceding that attacks on the Church are over and these prayers are not needed?

Someone must not like the prayer to St. Michael and the other prayers offered to protected the Church from the attacks and the infiltration.

  • Is there a French tradition (or exemption) of replacing the Prayers After Low Mass with a hymn?

  • Louisville KY.  I checked the Walton bulletin and no such announcement.
The prior for Walton, Fr Stanich, was at my local chapel today. Had I known beforehand, I could have asked him if he knew about that happening in Louisville after he finished blessing sacramentals today.

Well, it is not harvest season and Louisville area biggest fear is flooding. I have not heard of flooding being an issue this season. So, yeah, it looks like a novelty. Now if it was September, it might have some merit.

  • I believe this is for the Rogation prayers associated with Ember Days, for the wheat harvest (to make Hosts).  Is it May 31, June 2, and June 3 of this year?
Perhaps they’ve been put in place of the regular prayers after low Mass because they’re supposed to be offered publicly.  Most chapels don’t have Mass available on these days and they want parishioners to hear them?  I have no idea why a chapel wouldn’t just do both; low Mass prayers as usual followed by Rogation prayers.  Maybe they fear people will will just leave because it’s another 15 minutes or so?  (In which case, I’d say let them leave if they’re more interested in their sports or whatever that they won’t give Our Lord an extra few minutes!)  Definitely no coffee and donuts for those who skip out early!
    Is this SSPX?  FSSP?   Diocesan?
Is it possibly 100% legit. due to a priest needing to make a flight to say Mass in another place?

  • I know firsthand that this is at the Sanford FL SSPX chapel, they offer these prayers annually to pray for relief from hurricanes. And yes, these are a substitute for the usual prayers after Low Mass, quite odd. I have been in attendance when they’ve skipped the prayers completely after Mass but it’s been awhile since I’ve seen that happen again. The Prior is French.

  • If one looks at the O'Connell's manual on how to offer Mass, there are actually numerous occassions when the Leonine Masses are ommitted or replaced after a Low Mass. These cases have rarely been observed in my 40+ years attending the Tridentine Mass, but this OP seems to fall into those categories.

It reminds me of the long-time 62 Missal trad who encounters a proper Last Gospel for the first time at a pre-62 Missal chapel.

This is planting season and prayers are needed.  If it floods, there goes the crops. The Catholic Church has prayers for many things.

  • What prayers were said after low Mass before 1884.

As far as music goes,  there should be an entrance and exit hymn sung by congregation at low Mass.  It seems zero hymns means like a punishment for not going to the high Mass.

  • The Leonine prayers can be omitted if the celebrant is to perform some other function per my pre-54 Missal, i.e. Procession as was done yesterday for the May Crowning, etc. As far as omitting them for a weather blessing, that has always seemed wrong to me. Leaving Low Mass with no prayers whatsoever left me stunned on more than one occasion, but I'm hoping this specific SSPX chapel has stopped that practice as I've not seen it in awhile.

With the Rogation Days being this week, I don't see anything wrong in omitting the Low Mass Prayers in favor of the Rogation Day prayers but that's my opinion.

  • A parishoner requested it.  The prayer was A fulgure, grandine et tempestate in English.

    Thanks for the responses.
