Changes in the SSPX - present tense

  • Source : Psalm 129

You have heard it said that the Society of St. Pius has not changed and that if a deal with Pope Francis ever comes to fruition they will keep on doing what they’ve always done.

    If only that were true.

We present below evidence that the Society of St. Pius X has in fact put on a new man. More precisely, Angelus Press (the Society’s publishing arm) has adopted a more politically correct editorial approach than in the past.

This new direction, we believe, is a result of the new “branding” campaign spoken of several years ago by Fr. Patrick Girouard, who told his flock that Fr. Wegner informed him that the Society was no longer going to be “negative” but rather that it was going to “be positive” and start to speak about “the beauty” of Tradition instead of the errors of the Church.

If true (and we believe they are) Fr. Girouard’s remarks help us understand why what Angelus Press published prior to 2012 is markedly different in tone and content when compared to what has been published since.

This shift also appears to coincide with the softer attitudes possessed by many of the newly-ordained priests in the Society. Generally speaking, they all seem to be nice young lads, but one senses that they know very little about geo-politics, ʝʊdɛօ-Masonry, economics or political and cultural affairs.

Below are just a few of the hard-hitting, doctrine-heavy texts the Angelus Press of old held up as their prized publications:

Fr. Peter Scott, Is Tradition Excommunicated? Where is Catholicism Today? A Collection of Independent Studies, 1993
Fr. Stephen DeLallo, The Sword of Christendom: The work of Catholic Action to re-establish the reign of Christ the King, 1994
Fr. Kenneth Novak, Dr. Peter Chojnowski, Matthew Anger, Puritan’s Progress: A Catholic Perspective on American History, Volume 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 1996
Dom Paul Nau, O.S.B., Pope or Church? Essays on the Infallibility of the Ordinary Magisterium, 1996
Fr. Alfred Roussel, Liberalism & Catholicism, 1998
Fr. Johannes Dormann, Pope John Paul II’s Theological Journey to the Prayer Meeting of Religions in Assisi, Part I, Part II – Volume 1, 2, 3
Priest, Where Is Thy Mass? Mass, Where Is Thy Priest?: Seventeen Independent Priests Tell Why They Celebrate the Latin Mass, 2004
From Ecuмenism to Silent Apostasy, 2006
Fr. Matthias Gaudron, Catechism of the Crisis in the Church, 2010
The collected writings of Carol Robinson and Ed Willock were also hallmarks of Angelus Press during its golden years in the 90s and 2000s.

Compare those titles to what is posted under the “Featured” section on the Angelus Press website today:

    screen-shot-2017-01-09-at-7-46-05-pm.jpg

The “New Releases” section is similarly head-scratching:

    screen-shot-2017-01-09-at-7-46-26-pm.jpg

While none of these titles should be ignored by Traditional Catholics, the absence of the books Angelus Press used to publish is striking. It is almost as if the Society has become effeminate – promoting books that deal more with one’s prayer life while obscuring those that are more combative towards the errors of Rome and the modern world. One wonders if this change has been undertaken because the Society, like the Church at Vatican II, feels the older books make them look like “a prophet of doom.”

Let us fervently pray that the Society of St. Pius X returns to its former self. In a world awash in sin and confusion, one must follow in the footsteps of Archbishop Lefebvre, who undoubtedly preached the truths of the Catholic faith but at the same was unafraid to condemn the errors of liberalism, modernism, and progressivism in the Conciliar Church.

  • I noticed this too -- it's all "positive", borderline fluff now, just like TAN Books (which was bought by a Novus Ordo company in 2009, I might point out)

Maybe these books have some nutritional value, but nothing like the health food they used to put out!

  • I have a few family members who left tradition for the indult/Rome.  They constantly talk about the 'good' and 'positive changes' that are happening in catholicism.  This is all fine and dandy, but you can't ignore the 99 rotten apples on the apple tree and talk only about the 1 apple that is good enough to eat.  They have a mental block on seeing reality as it is.  Part of this mental block is self-inflicted.  Part is propaganda.  The sspx is years into their program of propaganda and change.

  • And next month, my dear readers!

The Angelus Press will feature more exciting articles on such topics as:

Alternative energy sources used in the Holy Land...

The favorite "Lap-dogs" of traditional Catholic family homes....

And the most popular Kosher dishes served in some of New York's finest restaurants!

Sanctity of life will be held in derision even by those who outwardly profess it, for in those days Our Lord Jesus Christ will send them not a true Pastor but a destroyer."  St. Francis of Assisi

I never said the words you quoted. It was pasted from another blog.

It's not that the spiritual life is effeminate -- it's that groups like the FSSP *only* have the so-called "spiritual" but they're missing the opposition to evil. Eventually, that will get them every time. Principles and doctrine are of primary importance.

If one ignores the spiritual life and just focuses on "the fight", you have Fr. Joseph Pfeiffer. That priest has had a sad fall from grace -- he is bitter, and has resorted to actual LYING and slander of fellow-priests -- mostly because of his mysterious attachment to the apostate "pablo the Amateur Exorcist".

I knew an extremely pious seminarian who is currently divorced (he married in the Novus Ordo), and for a while was even "dating" again. While married to his (novus ordo) wife, he delayed the baptism of his second child for something like 6 or 7 months -- like a typical novus ordite. That's what piety without doctrine gets you.

Suckers for the tricks of the Modernists.  And no hatred of heresy.  Pious frauds.

    Dear Matthew,

How would you consider a divorced man pious? It seems that the man is suffering from satanic delusion? Wouldn't it be a pretend piety? I have no bone in the above argument, but I am curious.

I wouldn't -- I never said I did. That's my point. What good is a strong devotion to Padre Pio, spending hours in the chapel moving your lips silently, if you end up falling into heresy and error! This is the main problem with the Novus Ordo. They feed the hungry and are full of "luv", but 3/4 of them believe actual heresies (or fail to believe Catholic dogmas).

There is no possible way that can end well. Doctrine is the foundation of everything. Undermine doctrine, and eventually you won't have the nice externals either!

I think this is the fundamental key of what's wrong with attending the FSSP, SSPX, or other Indult groups. Today you would be fine. But how do you keep yourself safe from Modernist contagion, when you fail to maintain a state of war? It's impossible. Eventually, you will gingerly work your way into more and more "mainstream" areas of the Conciliar Church, until one day your children are giving the Handshake of Peace at a Novus Ordo service. Liberalism is a spirit. It's insidious that way.

Now even if they were only *material* heretics, it still will result in evil consequences. Heresy results in evils, whether you willfully embrace a heresy, or only hold it "materially" because you were poorly catechized.

When he was in his mid-twenties, he used to spend more time in the chapel than any of us. He was certainly stronger in the "piety" department than the "doctrine" department.

Now this young man SHOULD have known better. What, did he not believe in the necessity of baptism for salvation? Did he think being a human being would get his baby into heaven if it died in an accident? Catholics traditionally baptize their babies DAYS after birth, not months.

If you're too strong in the "doctrine" department and forget about piety and charity, then you end up like the Dimond brothers or Fr. Joseph Pfeiffer. That's not good either.

We need a balance of the two.

  • One cannot be too strong in the area of doctrine, period!   That does not in any way preclude such individuals from having a deep piety or great charity.

The Saints and Martyrs of the old Church did not lack in any of these virtues,  and it is only with the advent of modern subjective thinking that diminishing one in favor of the other is a workable solution. We are to excel in all virtue, never sacrificing one for the other, rather we are to correct the area in which we are failing.

The imbalance of some men is not caused by to strong an adherence to doctrine. A deficient understanding and misapplication of doctrine is where problems arise with some who are mentioned above.

    Matthew,
    Quote
.Now this young man SHOULD have known better. What, did he not believe in the necessity of baptism for salvation?

Indeed he should know and is obligated before God to know. He damns Himself by his negligence or culpable ignorance and any one who encourages this in another by silence or consent shares in the sin and failure before God.

In a similar fashion, the average conciliar Catholic ought to know that his religion is not Catholic and do something about it.
That grace which God bequeaths to each man to use of his reason and mental faculties in seeking the Truth, will be the instrument of his destruction when not applied and used with due diligence. Ignorance will not save them.

As for Mr. McFarland, he has a dog in the fight, his son in the SSPX and his arm will be seen waving the SSPX banner as his hand and that sect sinks beneath the waves of the conciliar tide which they have foolishly dared to wade into.
