  • Changes to the Mass postures in SSPX English Speaking Countries, changing customs, and the "Ugly American".

From another thread we read the following:

    Quote from: padrepio

At the chapel we attend we had a French priest who would skip the Leonine Prayers at the end of Low Mass.  He explained it was common in France not to say them, but so many people complained he ended up saying the prayers after the Mass.

This posting reminded me of the name that many American tourists brought upon all Americans by their wanting everything to be done like in America, they were called the "Ugly American". The Ugly American would complain that there was no hamburgers and fries on the menu, or that there was no Budwiesser at the German Beer Hall, or that there were no king/queen size bed, or showers in the rooms, or air conditioning in the rooms & cars, or that no one spoke English, or the street signs were not in English, or that the Europeans didn't bathe, etc. Tour groups would all get drunk at the German beer hall and sing God Bless America, over the sound of the local Getrman singing. The Ugly American wanted Europe (or whatver foreign country) to be exactly like the USA, except for the land and architecture. They wanted the natives to be all Americans, acting and speaking like Americans. They laughed at everything that was different from what it was in America.

Well, now it is the French that are coming to America, the SSPX priests, who have taken over the seminary, and the positions of power, the priory, and schools, who are imposing their customs on us. Now we have the "Ugly Frenchman", coming over hear wanting to change our customs to the Freach ways. That is exactly what has happened. They have gone into the seminary to teach the young there, and have gone into the SSPX schools to teach the young there. They have not published one article saying that they will be making these changes, because it would cause an uproar among the SSPX faithful who still have not been slow cooked.

Beware of the Ugly Frechman who will try to change American customs to the French ways. If they tell you that this is the way it is done in France, then tell them that if they are so interested in changing customs, then they should change France, not our customs.

  • It would be better to speak of the ugly liberals, the ugly freemasons, the ugly judaizers.

But yes, the French have made a bad name for themselves here.

That there are beautiful Catholic examples among the French doesn't make the general French example good.  In fact it just makes the deficiencies of typical French all the more glaring.

The French attitudes are liberal and condescending, they are repellent.

  • Instead of engaging in this cultural warfare, the more important battle we should focus on is to fight for Christ in preserving the true Faith.

The problem is that Germany and France are becoming extremely liberal and intolerant of authentic Catholicism, and those attitudes are being imposed by foreigners in this country.  Foreigners who often have a real problem with basic civility and decency, because of the evil cultures they come from.

Fighting to preserve the true faith is what we are doing. Our customs (traditions) in English speaking countries should not be changed to any other countries customs nor our mass customs imposed upon those other countries.

We American Roman Catholics could replace our customs with those of the Catholic Melkites, and still "fight for Christ in preserving the true Faith". But that is not the way it has ever been done, and there is a reason for that, it is not a coincedence. Local mass customs were always respected by foreignors, and the VATICAN itself.

  • I have only met one French priest in America who did not fit that stereotype. He was kind, and so very humble. All who met him here had the opinion he may someday be a saint.

This has nothing to do with the French people, I have many great friends who are French, it has to do with the changing of customs, and imposing ones customs upon others. The "Ugly American", the "Ugly French" are not representative of all Americans and all French, (although sometimes it seems that way).

There are many French priests in the resistance.

I'm guessing that was Fr Thierry Gaudray.

  • A preponderance of French priests and seminarians will have an effect on the Society. I always said its detachment from Rome started with the French and will end with the French. European Catholics like American money; the SSPX does not go into other countries for nothing. But French/German liberalism will be the final clincher. If they can, the 'Anglo-Saxons' must break away.
