  • Father Rafael Arizaga signs his name as it is supposed to be (Spanish) while the author of Catholic Candle changes his name using the English version, Raphael. ????
    .
You may have hit the nail on the head, AveCorMariae.
    .
Checking back, it appears the author of CC may be somehow revered as an authority by Greg Taylor, unless the latter just doesn't have time to be careful when he cranks out another "issue."  He has copied these spelling inconsistencies in the Recusant exactly as they occur on CC.
    .
Taking this one step further, the deliberate misspelling of a priest's name toward replicating the name of a holy angel as found in the target language might imply a kind of mysterious reverence toward the priest if only by subtle suggestion.
    .
A good question to ask here might be, "When written in Spanish is the name of the angel Saint Raphael spelled San Rafael?" Because I don't know the answer to that.
    .
An abiding fact of English culture is that certain Englishmen harbor an abiding contempt of Spanish and everything Hispanic, and it sometimes comes out in odd ways. I know a man who spends hundreds of dollars to rent a Tux and hire a limo just so he can show up and stand around like a statue in the approximate neighborhood of "The Royals" when a British prince comes to town. But when he mentions the Mexican restaurant El Pollo Loco (properly pronounced "el poyo loco"), he says "el polo loco" like the sport played on horseback which curiously is popular in the UK. When I asked him why he insists on mispronouncing the word Pollo, he said, "Because I hate everything about the Mexican language."
    .
Now, maybe it's unfair to characterize specific Englishmen based on the behavior of others who are not English but try to act as if they are. It should be obvious to all that Greg Taylor is English. But I know nothing of the cultural bent of the CC author. His use of the English language is quite impressive, but it would be much more American English than British. So, at the moment, I am inclined toward thinking that Taylor respects the opinion of the CC author, and probably defers to his judgment on many things.
    .
Like I said above, today's search engine capabilities has its effect on our culture, and an example of this is how you're not too likely to be able to find answers to these questions by doing an online search.

  • СССР (Союз Советских Социалистических Республик) is a Russian abbreviation for the Soviet Union -- which unraveled!  Hmm -- interesting coincidence.
    .
I know a man who operates a limousine service in Van Nuys. He's from Russia. On his limo he has a custom "environmental" license plate which contains the letters, CCCP. I thought this is a bit odd since the Soviet Union was abolished (so to speak) 20 years ago.

Nope.  (I don't know Russian.  I cheated by looking up the CCCP on the Internet.)

  • San Miguel, San Gabriel and San Rafael are the Spanish names of the archangels.

I also find weird that he is referred by many of that group as Fr. Raphael, instead of Father Arizaga.

    .
As far as I know the Franciscans are one of only two religious congregations that traditionally uses first names for priests.
    .
St. Francis of Assisi was the originator of that tradition.
    .
Curiously, they called him "The Seraphic Father" even though his name was Brother Francis (not a priest).
    .
The other group are the Slaves of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. First names for all the brothers, sisters and priests. So once a name is taken then it is retired permanently. They don't have two with the same name.

  • Moderator: the short answer -- "Catholic (S)candle is run by a Pfeifferian lawyer out of Chicago."
It is a scandal because they, being Pfeifferian cultists, love to attack faithful Bishops and preists such as Bishop Williamson, Bishop Zendejas, etc. and propagate the Pfeifferian propaganda that most of the Resistance is the "false resistance" and only Boston, KY and those uncritical of same are the "true resistance". Like I said, a cult.
Matthew is absolutely correct in his assessment. It is a "one-man-show" written by a lawyer from Chicago who once attended an SSPX Chapel, but left to join Father Joseph Pfeiffer's version of the Resistance when Pope Francis announced that confessions heard by the SSPX priests were valid. He adheres strictly to what Fr. Pfeiffer supports, which includes a special hatred for Bishop Williamson. If you browse back through the past issues (I'd suggest you not waste you time), you will notice many vicious attacks on anyone who does not adhere strictly to Boston, KY, especially Bishop Williamson; much repetition; and absolutely no mention of the Bishop Moran fiasco, I mean NONE. That should help one see the bias.

And of course, no mention of the crazy praxis which transpires at the Pfeifferville "seminary" nor any mention of the administrator or whatever title he, Pablo (Paul Hernandez) holds down there.
