CathInfo will stay the course, as usual

  • There is a bit of drama going on behind the scenes, in e-mail exchanges to which I have been made aware (or even participated in), and some frustration-fueled protests/boycotts/etc. -- so far 2 website self-shutdowns.

They make some good points, and they are good guys, but they are throwing out the baby with the bathwater in my opinion.

I have received the blessing of Bishop Williamson on CathInfo, on more than one occasion. I see no reason to change what I'm doing.

CathInfo's philosophy is close to that of the United States Postal Service: "Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds."

To apply this motto more specifically to CathInfo, "Neither SSPX propaganda, nor persecution, nor lawsuits, nor protests, nor controversy, nor drama, nor threats, nor intimidation, nor politics, nor outbursts of anger followed by penitence, nor boredom, frustration or any other emotion, nor Denial-Of-Service attacks, nor technical or financial difficulties, nor obsolete software, nor personal life changes, shall shut down or cause posts to be lost on this important Traditional Catholic discussion forum." and CathInfo has lived up to this promise for close to 11 years.

  • What is it that they want the bishops to speak about? That they are not talking about already?

They want the bishops to "pontificate" more, set conditions for being part of the Resistance, settle disputes authoritatively, and in general take a more active and authoritative posture.

Some of these things sound good (or even great, exciting) but I'm inclined to pray and wait for this WHILE keeping open the communications hub that is CathInfo.

  • Thank you for all you and Mater do.

I appreciate more and more every year what dedication, time, commitment and sheer stubbornness you both must have to keep CathInfo open against all odds and forge the way for your own little chapel too. It's truly a kind of apostolate.

I think our numbers are such that we don't need many forums, (having many forums may even work against us), but having one constant is really beneficial.

I know nothing of the drama, but I understand the frustration. I wonder if maybe the bishops will become more authoritative when there are more priests to direct. They don't have a lot to work with right now.

    Time will tell...
But I doubt the bishops will pay any attention.

  • The Bishops are spiritually leading, but when they interfere in potential bickering, or tell chapels what to do, or start laying down rules, it becomes a "no win" situation.  First, objectively, they don't have authority since they aren't part of the Church, so people really don't have to obey them.  Secondly, while some authoritative decisions always helps, it can hurt if the party judged against feels an injustice.  Then a split would happen or a big, emotional rift would develop, which satan is diabolically an EXPERT at creating, since he uses emotions and misunderstandings to thwart peace and misdirect good intentions.

In short, while I objected at first to +Williamson's first thoughts on the Resistance as an 'autonomous collective' of independent yet connected chapels, I finally see what he was talking about.  IMO, He wants to avoid the issues I outlined above and hopefully concentrate on spiritual matters.

I suspect that any direction, advice or strategy meetings will take place at a priestly level.  I doubt that we laity - who are used to hearing a 'game plan' or a 'motivating speech' about what the leadership is going to do - should expect to hear the details of such meetings.  Keeping such conversations private will side-step any appearance of bickering and keep the devil out of it (as much as possible) and not give a public black eye to a growing organization.  This will help to keep the Faith first and foremost, which it should be, not the governance of an organization.

    I couldn't resist

There are rifts due to the (Validly consecrated) R&R bishops being basically "rent-a-Bishops".
They are quite comfortable alluding to "I have no jurisdiction" so "I am just offering my services as a high priest".
They get their flights, room and board taken care of. They confer the sacraments and are in their comfort zones.
Here again, when it comes down to local issues, they take the fifth: Provide their "non-canonical status and Ecclesia supplet" cards and it's all good.
Could you explain what you would want them to do differently?  If you want them to wield auhority, then, by definition, they must have a way to punish/correct.  How do they do so, without any power from Rome?  They can't excommunicate, they can't issue official legal rulings, or theological treatises.  You want them to act like the Church, but that's an impossibility.  If I'm missing something, please enlighten me.

At this point I am just thankful there ARE "rent-a-bishops" (as horrible as that phrase is).

That anyone can possibly think a faithful Catholic bishop in today's world is in his comfort zone simply by having a few practical, material matters taken care of is a little surprising. If they are anywhere near worth their salt, their crosses are more than we can begin to imagine. We shouldn't have to see their "discomfort" to know it exists. If God is doing what He does to mold saints, then they are plenty uncomfortable. Other than as a source of sanctification and suffering, I can't imagine they enjoy the predicament they are in.

I am not caught up in any local issues but I do have sympathy for those who are. I may find myself there someday. But I think about times in the past or possibly in the future when people truly didn't have access to any Sacraments, or risked their lives anytime they did, and I can't help but wonder if we are still taking way too much for granted.

Well, Matthew, please know that we all appreciate that you have kept this forum up.  And I think that many people have benefited from it.
It was the first traditional Catholic Forum I ever joined and that was about 5 years ago now...

  • I hope this forum site remains. Traditional Catholics are few in number, dispersed across the world, and often it feels like you are completely alone. Sites like this help remind you that you're not alone.

  • No one specifically asked me to shut CathInfo -- unless you count a bit of "peer pressure" coming from Samuel (ABLF3) and Sean Johnson.

    Don't worry -- I wasn't tempted for a second.

That's why I'm pointing out that a LOT has changed since 2006, and a lot has happened during that time. But CathInfo has been here, stable, through it all. And it will continue to be, until I'm dead! And hopefully my wife and/or son will be able to take over after that point.
