The news was known for some time, it was made official this morning during announcements at mass.
Bishop Fellay, superior of the SSPX will meet the Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, also president of the Pontifical Commission Ecclesia Dei. This will take place in Rome.

It was explained to us insistently to cut short any noise at any rally, that the meeting was informal. This will be the first time that Bishop Fellay meet Bishop Müller since he was appointed head of the Commission Ecclesia Dei. The priest reminded us that Bishop Müller also distinguished himself by his opposition to the Brotherhood when he was in Germany before his appointment as head of the CDF.

Bishop Müller was promoted to the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith by Pope Benedict XVI, who was also appointed archbishop. Although he was kept in his post by Francis, since Benedict has resigned, the lines have moved somewhat since Bishop Müller was the leader of the prelates 'conservatives' who in the conciliar Church rose against the draft question the lack of access of divorced and remarried to communion. This project was presented by Cardinal Kasper at the Synod of Bishops in February, with the encouragement of Francis who made this subject "the business of his pontificate."

The reason that was given to us by Father Carlhian this morning is, as I wrote above, that Monsignor Fellay has not met the Prefect of the CDF and the EDC since the appointment of the latter by Benedict XVI, and therefore they are going to know each other. But there is no object in this meeting, if not met ...

  • I find it so incredible that through the history of the Conciliar sect, extreme liberals end up being considered by so many to be conservatives because they only go so far in their liberalism.

At Vatican 2, Ratzinger was a liberal.  When he was elected pope of the Conciliar sect, he was considered a conservative but he didn't change!

When Mueller was appointed head of the CDF, he was a liberal.  Now, he's considered a conservative but he hasn't, as far as I know, changed a bit!

Pretty soon we'll hear people talking about a particular cardinal being a "conservative" because he doesn't think the Church should be canonizing Luther even though he went along with the divorce and remarriage changes.

    The goal posts keep moving.
For there shall arise false Christs and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders, insomuch as to deceive (if possible) even the elect. (Matthew 24:24)

Not yet.  It may be first and goal, but I don't see a score yet.

  • Battle lines have already been drawn.  I don't think a signed docuмent or even verbal agreement will result in an influx of NeoSSPX Priests breaking ranks, older priests will not want to lose their security and younger priests have been groomed for the inevitable compromise with modernist Rome.

  • It is just that the Society is not in step with the speed of change within the new church. Yesterday's liberals are regarded as today's conservatives. And these conservatives may have some sympathy for those who feel they are on the wrong side of history but they are astute enough to know that they hold their office as guarantors of the new order they were instrumental in introducing. Ratzinger's momentary lapse was swiftly corrected when acting collegially.

The Society will have to concede far more to be able to share in the latest Vatican thinking but it has got off to a good start because of its willingness to talk unconditionally, excluding those things which serious traditionalists would regard as fundamental. Further, any breakthrough will indicate that the greater part of Lefebvre's movement is no longer strictly traditionalist (if it ever were) and its current leaders in their new-found liberalism may be realising they have a lot in common with mainstream conservatives. Before this happens, confusion will continue to reign within Menzingen's domain and the laity's loyalty will need to be stronger than their intelligence.

This is perhaps, a very accurate assessment. For the SSPX, the die is cast. There will be no return to the past.

  • The Vatican and the wider church that matters are thoroughly modernist. To get anywhere with them you first have to accept their language and way of thinking. Progress will be made after a re-education programme inside the SSPX, blatant in some places, subtle in others. Then, in time, Bp. Fellay will feel confident enough to accept whatever terms are presented whenever Rome is in the mood again to renegotiate.

'Getting to know Francis' is rather pointless if he is going to retire in a few years. In any case the weakened SSPX having demonstrated that it is a lamb for slaughter will find itself eventually dealing with ED minions. As for the progress made, one only needs to see how excitedly Rorate Caeli is covering events!

  • The preservation of the Faith and its Tradition is no longer in the hands of the SSPX. They have set a new course, leaving the bunker behind, they now journey out into the wastelands.
