  • Two videos I find perplexing, certainly you all can help me...

The first video is from Our Lady of Sorrows in Phoenix Arizona. The Palm Sunday Mass of today. Starting at 7:00 minutes you can watch another Priest read the long Gospel in the vernacular from the pulpit WHILE the Priest offering Mass is reading it for the Latin Mass Ritual. The abuse seems to be drawing the congregation's attention away from the Mass at the very least - if you ask me. Maybe trying to rush and get things done?  :(

Video two, St Marys Kansas Compline - watching from 12:45 you can hear a woman leading a part of the Divine Office. Now, doesn't St Marys have 12 Priests or something? Many men are in attendance too...are they shoehorning in women like the Novus Ordo Lectors?

Please excuse my ignorance if these things are normal.

  • I have seen the first practice done in an sspx Church before.  It is very offputting and distracting but my understanding (which may be wrong) is that the compromised 1962 Missal allows for this practice.  So while I would certainly call it a novelty, I dont believe it is an "abuse," within the parameters of the (seriously flawed) Missal they use.  As an ironic side note, their use of the confiteor before Communion, while a traditional practice, could accurately be called an "abuse" in relation to the missal they use, which impiously abolished the practice.  If however, like me, your qualm is with their Missal itself, then this particular aberration pales to the rest of today's SSPX liturgy.

As for a woman leading the Office prayers, I assume it was a nun and without knowing the specific circuмstances I would think the safe and charitable assumption would be that it was justified in this instance.  I am not knowledgeable on the laws governing the public Divine Office, so I personally would assume the best.

The first one, I've never seen it or heard of it so I would say definitely an innovation although I'm sure it has been done before.  I don't think I would call it an abuse, but certainly not thoroughly orthodox.
The second one, I have never heard a women say the divine office, I would say this is an abuse and a scandal at its core.  The priests should saying it, it is certainly a slippery slope the neo sspx priests are on.
