Archbishop Lefebvre’s Remains to be Transferred

  • Apparently in September, as part of the festivities celebrating the 50 year anniversary of the founding of the SSPX, the Archbishop’s remains will be transferred from the little mausoleum/tomb down the hill from the main chapel in Écône, to the crypt under the main chapel.

I would love to be there to see if he is incorrupt, or whether an odor of sanctity can be detected.

If neither are detected, it means nothing.  But if either are detected, it would be a miraculous and indisputable heavenly endorsement of Archbishop Lefebvre and his apostolate.

  • Why are they moving him?  Is his family ok with this?

At least you could visit his outside grave site.  If it is in underneath a chapel , you can only visit when chapel is open.
May God bless you and keep you

I don’t know the answers to your questions.

Also, I’m not sure how the Ecône chapel crypt is situated, but normally such an area would not be open to the public, even when the main chapel is open.

Maybe that is different in Écône, but in Winona, there was a crypt area containing several altars side by side for priests to say their private daily Masses, but it was a private section of the seminary, and the faithful were never allowed access to that area.

    So would most Traditional Catholics.

  • Unfortunately, the Archbishop's body was embalmed which will interfere with the decomposition process.
I remember a senior SSPX priest at the time being quite disgusted with the job of embalming that was done.
    A great shame...

  • I don’t think anyone should be embalmed.  Just put the person on ice  I guess they inject poison into the person to make sure they stay dead.  These day many Catholics are being cremated.
May God bless you and keep you

  • Yes, I was in disbelief myself at the time, hearing that he was embalmed. Why would you do such a thing, when we all believed him to be a saint? Fr Schmidberger even called on Rome, in his funeral oration, to open the cause for his canonisation. So why not leave Almighty God a chance to do His own work of preservation and manifest to us His approval of His faithful servant? I can imagine Bishop Williamson telling us that God allowed it because this generation was not worthy of so great a sign. Nonetheless, the Good Lord can still give us one if He so wishes. An odour of sanctity, as Sean mentions, would be no less miraculous.

  • This makes me think of the reports that Bishop Carmonas body was found incorrupt:

I've never found that super convincing, honestly. I think the fact that they never allowed anyone to investigate the body, and that the only real evidence comes from word of mouth from the clergy who would be most likely to make it up, makes the miracle dubious at best.
