Father didn't care about money at all. He used what he had to help people get the Mass and what they needed. I know people that have gone to him when in financial trouble, and he was always there to help. Sometimes, he was even an anonymous benefactor to people that needed it. If anything, the Society took advantage of Father in some way, instead of looking at Father like some rich man who fed a society "obsessed" with money. He was "obsessed" with the salvation of souls, going to prisons, nursing homes and the sick and dying. Consecrating homes to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
I'll tell you a story.
Once, he had gotten to the top of his barn in New Hampshire, to fix some shingles on the roof. He was in his farm clothing, and realized he'd forgotten something. So, he got down off the barn, and had to go to the hardware store in town. Changed into his priest wear, and drove down there.
When he got out of his car, there was a man that came up to him, pleading with him for help, saying that he would commit ѕυιcιdє. He had a gun in his hand.
He offered the man the sacraments, and up to the day he died, he still had that gun, and that man is trying like the rest of us to lead a Catholic life.
If Father hadn't taken his duty seriously, he could have just gone down to the hardware store like any "Father Bill" out in his farm clothes and went to pick up what it was he needed there, and likely, that desperate man would have been dead by his own hand.
Maybe the society was obsessed with property as you say, but Father wasn't. He cared about making sure people had the Mass and Sacraments. He didn't care if it was out of someone's basement, garage, or shed. He cared that they had what they needed to SAVE THEIR SOULS.
