The seeds of a "necessary reconciliation" were already being sown in 1997… with the participation of SSPX priests and Bishop Fellay's knowledge and approval.

I have just finished reading the book of Father Michel Lelong entitled "For a necessary reconciliation" - published in December 2011.
This is a small book of 159 pages; a not very exciting but a fast read.
It outlines what is the “GREC”: (Groupe de Réflexion Entre Catholiques - Group for Reflection among Catholics)
This booklet summarizes the work done by the “GREC” and is a kind of self-congratulation of the author who was at the origin of this group. Its purpose is to work for the rallying of the SSPX to conciliar Rome, while recognizing the Council. Unintentionally, however, this little book clarifies the shifts seen at the head of the SSPX and demonstrates how the rallying with conciliar Rome has been able to corrupt so many minds within the SSPX.
This focus group was founded in 1997 with the aim of integrating the SSPX with modernist Rome by making it accept Vatican II.
The initiators are Mr. and Mrs. Pérol (Mr. Pérol was ambassador of France in Rome) and Father Michel Lelong, author of this book and strong advocate of inter-religious dialogue and the Council.
The purpose of the “GREC” is not ambiguous, it is made clear throughout the book by the different actors: "Interpreting Vatican
 II in light of Tradition" according to the formula that John Paul II gave to Archbishop Lefebvre in 1978 .
Father Michel Lelong is convinced of the benefits of the Council and in particular the benefits of "Nostra Aetate", he who is a specialist in dialogue with Muslims.
The idea of the ambassador was to make “dialogue” with the traditional Catholic SSPX in the same way as this is practiced with other religions; he regretted that the SSPX was excluded.
Father Lorans SSPX, one of the four founders of the “GREC”, is spokesman for the SSPX district of France. He obtained permission from Bishop Fellay to dialogue for the "necessary for reconciliation." He is very attentive in keeping Bishop Fellay abreast of the progress of this dialogue.
The "charter" of this group was defined by Mr. Pérol shortly before his death: "to interpret Vatican II in light of Tradition." This is what Benedict XVI calls, for his part, the "hermeneutics of continuity" in opposition to the hermeneutic of rupture. Archbishop Lefebvre had also concluded, despairingly, that there had been a “hermeneutic of rupture” after a long journey of attempted agreements with the conciliar church, and, seeing that agreement was impossible, proceeded with the consecration of four bishops in 1988.
The group started its activities in small groups around Mrs. Perol and Father Michel Lelong, with Father Emmanuel du Chalard SSPX "who never ceased to provide support to the “GREC” as discreet as he was attentive."
  "Two other priests contributed decisively to the creation and the life of our goup for discussion among Catholics. One, God rest his soul, was the Dominican, Father Olivier de La Brosse, the other Father Alain Lorans of the Priestly Society of Saint Pius X. I [Father Lelong] got to know them in 1997 during a meal to which we had been invited by Mrs. Perol. The GREC was born on that day." (page 24)
This meeting took place in Rome at Mrs Pérol’s home.
Father Olivier de La Brosse, who died in 2009 was spokesman for the Bishops' Conference of France. Father Alain Lorans SSPX, meanwhile, was spokesman for the SSPX district of France. The latter having obtained permission from Bishop Fellay to dialogue " for a necessary reconciliation" within this group.
Thus, we have the four founders of the “GREC”: Mrs Perol, Father Michel Lelong, Father Alain Lorans SSPX, Father de la Brosse OP.
In the months that followed, these initial protagonists won disciples in their respective communities.
Soon conferences were held, but without sounding the trumpets; it was necessary that this should remain confidential.
"When we meet in friendship, writes Father Michel Lelong, “I often think of Gilbert Pérol who, while actively participating in Christian-Muslim dialogue, had the idea of this dialogue between Catholics." (page 27)
Successive Apostolic Nuncios and various other personalities of the conciliar church supported this group. These people regularly informed the Pope of how the dialogue was progressing.
The Superior of the Fraternity of Saint Peter’s French district, Father Ribeton, came to join the group, and a little later that of Institute of Christ the King, etc...
Abridging what is already a summary, we should note that the initiative for the lifting of excommunication of the four bishops of the SSPX goes back to the “GREC”. It was already requested for the Jubilee of 2000! In any case, this is what Father Lelong in this book explicitly claims, with many quotations from exchanges of letters between the group, the Roman authorities and the Superior of the SSPX.
When we are told by the SSPX that this was one of the points in the famous “road-map” devised by the SSPX, this is not entirely true, since the initiative first came from the “GREC”
Endlessly the expression  "full communion" is used:
"As far as I'm concerned, being a priest fifty years and having devoted my ministry to the relationship between the Church and the Muslims, I am deeply attached to the teachings of Vatican II and I am trying to raise awareness and understanding in those of our fellow Catholics who followed Archbishop Lefebvre and his successors. " (Father Lelong, Page 42)
The message is clear, therefore, and Bishop Fellay should not play the fainting maiden, claiming in 2012 that he had discovered all of a sudden in a letter from the Pope, that the SSPX was expected to recognise Vatican II!
It was clear from the beginning of the talks within the “GREC”!
On 6th January 2004, Father de la Brosse sent a letter to Cardinal Castrillon Hoyos (Ecclesia Dei Commission) to report on the conference "Tradition and Modernity" organized by the “GREC” on 22nd November  2003 in Paris:
"Monseigneur Philippe Breton, who at our request was appointed by Bishop Ricard, President of French Episcopal Conference, as" Bishop consultant "of the group, attended the meeting and presided the opening prayer. Father Lorans, of the SSPX presided the final prayer.

“The very purpose of the conference seems clear to all: French Catholics of various and even opposite sensitivities have freely agreed to engage in a dialogue that does not prejudge a full reconciliation – domain reserved for the competent authorities - but opens up the possibility, when that day comes, for the partners in dialogue to have before them partners capable of understanding and mutual respect. (...)
“The number of participants was 40 people, all of whom were invited by individual group members. (...) Great discretion has been observed at the express request of Bishop Ricard, which corresponded to our own intentions. No professional journalist was present in the room. No information or comments have filtered out in the following days in the Catholic or secular press. "(Page 45 - 46)
“And with support from the Apostolic Nuncio and also through the efforts of Father La Brosse and Father Barthe, Cardinal Ratzinger, then prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, was kept informed of our activities.
“The election of Benedict XVI was welcomed (...) with great hope (...). We know, indeed, how in the first months of his pontificate the new Pope wanted to meet Bishop Fellay and made statements and took decisions that clearly manifest his desire to restore the unity of the Church by a hermeneutic "continuity" and not "rupture" with regard to the teachings of Vatican II.” (Pages 48-49)
After the Motu Proprio of 2007, leaders of the “GREC” addressed a letter to the Pope, asking once more for the lifting of the excommunications.
There follows, from page 55 onwards, a history of “GREC” activities and personalities of different tendencies that are to be involved in this process.
Following the meeting of the Pope and Bishop Fellay in 2005, “GREC” expands further. Representing the SSPX we note, among others: Father Gregoire Célier very present and active, Jacques-Régis du Cray (Producer of the latest film on the life of Achbishop Lefebvre) and even earlier, Marie-Alix Doutrebente etc..
It is from then on that the discussions point out the "doctrinal and spiritual convergences” between the two parties:
“On 10th June 2010 a meeting of the “GREC” was convened in order to show support for the Pope following a particularly unfair media campaign, Present were Father Matthieu Rouge, Rector of the Basilica of Sainte-Clotilde in Paris (.. .) and Father Lorans, responsible for communication of the SSPX. That evening, thanks to the presentations by two speakers and the discussion that followed, we felt how much was to be expected and hoped for, a reconciliation between Catholics, around the Pope and thanks to him.
“It was to contribute to this that during the 2010-2011 academic year, the “GREC” meetings were devoted to Vatican II, Archbishop Lefebvre and the Motu Proprio “Summorum Pontificuм”, with the participation of historians and theologians having different points of view. "(Page 69)
“At the time of writing these lines, it is to be hoped that these meetings will lead to an agreement without delay. But this does require of the SSPX the understanding that if it has much to offer to the Church of Rome, it also has much to receive. It must therefore cease to reject Vatican as a whole and accept its main orientations, interpreting them as the Holy Father proposes them today.” (Father Michel Lelong Page 85)
Follow the testimonies of different actors in the GREC, including (for the SSPX) Father Lorans, Marie-Alix Doutrebente, Jacques-Régis du Cray...
A very important place is given to Father Paul Aulagnier who began, even before the foundation of the “GREC”, to dialogue with conciliar personalities (especially with the abbot of Randol, Dom Lesquen), this, when he was District Superior of France. He continued this role when he became a member of the IBP – Institute of the Good Shepherd. He is still very active in support of rallying to Rome, he who has already “benefitted” from a place in the conciliar structure.
“I was glad to make, as soon as 1992 when I was District Superior of the SSPX in France, new contacts with the recognized ecclesiastical authorities.
“Passing one day by Randol (...) the abbot Dom Lesquen was talking to a young man in front of the monastery. Knowing the role he had played with Dom Gérard during his reconciliation with Rome, the 10th July 1988, I approached and talked with him (...) of reconciliation with Rome, of a normalization of the SSPX with Rome (...)" (Father Aulagnier, Page 104)

To understand the rallying process, it suffices to know the underground work of this privileged group whose members are exclusively co-opted ...
This book, published only in December 2011, is very important for us:  to show what, in the future, it is important NOT to do: no doctrinal discussions at any level until Rome has converted.
This was the point left by Archbishop Lefebvre and which has prevailed until rallying narrowly missed in June 2012:
"No canonical agreement without doctrinal agreement."
Inferiors do not form the superiors and yet, the SSPX after a canonical agreement would find itself under the authority of the pope and modernist conciliar Congregations.
Truth cannot bear any compromise with error and yet, the process started by the GREC is nothing other than a search for compromise.
Father Ludovic Barrielle (so highly revered by the Archbishop) stated in 1982:
"I am writing this to let it be a lesson for everyone. The day the SSPX abandons the spirit and the rules of its founder, it will be lost. In addition, all our brothers who, in the future, would judge and condemn the Founder and his principles will not hesitate to cast out from the Society the
traditional teaching of the Church and the Mass instituted by our Lord Jesus Christ.”
