I'm sure many others could chime in, only about Cincinnati, OH or St. Mary's, KS.
I think the moral of the story is:
Most of the time, you should STAY WHERE GOD PLANTED YOU. Either stay with "his" family or "her" family, or both.
That is, unless you live in an absolute wasteland as far as Traditional Catholicism goes. The Faith must come first. For those without weekly Tridentine Mass, you should move somewhere where the Mass and sacraments are available. But that leaves open a large number of possibilities, which respect one's place of origin and other things that make us different (cold weather lovers and hot weather lovers, yankees and southerners, etc.)
How many places could you choose from, where the Latin Mass is offered up on a weekly basis? (Granted, it's a bit harder now that the SSPX has fallen)
But for everyone to head for the "big meccas" of St. Marys, Post Falls, Mount St. Michaels, etc. is silly. That's too artificial.
Are we all to become Kansans, just because that's where the biggest Trad congregations are? What about our roots?
Obviously there's nothing wrong with Kansans, and some people were meant to be Kansan. For those who are meant to go there, and who have found happiness there, I applaud you. But I seriously doubt Kansas is meant to be a walled fortress, a "last stand" or defensive bastion behind whose walls the rest of the world can go to hell.
Now I'm not saying that no one should EVER move for the Mass and the Faith. If you are one of those few for whom uprooting your family is a good idea, at least know what you're getting yourself into. It's not a "wonderful Trad mecca" -- it's more like a Catholic Disneyland. Keep your expectations low and you'll be fine.
Keep your head out of the clouds and your two feet firmly on the ground. You still need to have a job, etc.
The best description I've ever heard of St. Mary's Kansas: "It's like every other SSPX chapel, only everything is 100X on steroids"
100X the gossip
100X the people
100X the parish life
100X the worldliness
100X the virtues
100X the temptations
100X the scandals
100X the number of eligible bachelors/ladies
100X the number of broken families
100X the drug users
etc.
I just don't believe that God calls everyone -- or even every fervent Catholic -- to move to St. Mary's. I believe He wants a few serious Catholics in missions chapels as well. Who's going to catechize and set the good example for new parishioners at chapels all across the country?
Aren't we supposed to be the salt of the earth, setting the world on fire with the love of God?
P.S. At the Independent chapel where I grew up, I only knew one person that took illegal drugs. And it was someone who spent a year or two at St. Mary's Academy. Take that for what it's worth.
