I spoke to an old friend recently who started telling me about what he had been
doing, some 30 years ago in Colorado, when he was going to the TLM there at
the time, and along came this new priest who had just been ordained. He was
very shy and nice, sort of a boy-next-door kind of young man, soft-spoken and
private, with lots of enthusiasm for the Faith of Catholics, and gave good
sermons.
He became the pastor of St. Isidore's parish there in Watkins, Colorado. He was
most thoroughly involved in building up the church to make it a beautiful Catholic
church that would endure many years into the future for Holy Mass.
His name was Father Joseph Pfeiffer, SSPX, and he had a brother named Timothy.
I couldn't believe my ears. I asked questions, and he confirmed his testimony.
He has not seen nor heard of the Frs. Pfeiffer in all these years, for he has not
been following the news of the SSPX in the world scene. And this is rather
understandable, for most people who do not attend SSPX chapels regularly are
not aware of the worldwide news of the things going on in the SSPX.
Then I tried to explain to him the Fr. Pfeiffer I know, although I have never met
him in person --- the way he preaches, the power of his expressions, the
unmistakable cogency of his rhetorical style, the compelling inspiration that he
infuses into his listeners if they would but open their hearts to the message that
he has to convey to those who hear their Master's voice, who can recognize the
Word of God coming through to mortal man loud and clear, as if we too are not
unable in this age of unfaith, in this age of the unclean spirit of Vatican II, in this
wicked and adulterous generation Our Lord spoke of in Scripture, that wee too
are not unable to hear what it must have sounded like to hear a sermon in the
days of St. Athanasius, St. John Chrysostom, St. Basil or St. Paul the Apostle.
My friend did not doubt me. He said he had always thought that Fr. Pfeiffer
"had it in him," but at the time, he was just out of the seminary and he was
just getting started.
I thought that was a worthwhile conversation.........
I thought, "wouldn't it be great if Fr. Pfeiffer could be involved in forming some
new priests who could carry the torch of Catholicism into the next generation?"
