I plugged 'how cold is space' into google.  This is what it put out:

"Space is very, very cold. The baseline temp is minus 455 degrees Fahrenheit, meaning it is barely above absolute zero, the point where molecular motion stops."

I then plugged in 'what temperature do computers stop working'.  This was the result:

"Electronic devices suffer from temperature extremes. Liquid Crystal Displays (LCDs) of laptops, phones, and PDAs really do freeze. Laptops have been designed to work within a safe temperature range, typically between 50 to 95 degrees F (10 - 35 degrees C)."

Voyager 1 is a metallic, mechanical device.  It has been continuously in an environment 'where molecular motions stops' for 45 years.  Traveling through space at a moderate 38,210 mph (hope nothing important was blown/ripped off along the way).  That thing is frozen solid.

The mystery of icon-preserving bees

In Greece, a pious beekeeper has a habit of putting icons in his beehives. The icons bless the bees ... and the bees protect the icons.

We knew that honey had preservative qualities to it, but we never imagined that bees could preserve icons. That’s just what happens near Athens, Greece, where a Catholic beekeeper likes to adorn his hives with icons.
For a decade, a beekeeper named Isidoros Ţiminis, living in the region of Kapandriti, near Athens, has kept a tradition: every spring, he slips icons of Christ, the Holy Virgin and different saints in his beehives, in order to bless his bees and his yearly honey production.
Every year, the very same mysterious phenomenon occurs: bees make their honeycomb cells around the pious images, meticulously avoiding covering them. Could it simply be a phenomenon related to some effect in the painting itself, which might prevent bees from building their honeycombs on them? In any case, the work of these peculiar Greek bees remains interest-worthy.
On a blog concerned with Orthodox Christianity, a monk named Simon docuмented his own efforts to bring icons to these bees. He brought a handmade icon of the Crucified Christ flanked by the two thieves who joined him. The bees reportedly built their hive around the icon, but refused to cover either Jesus or the figure of the “good thief,” at Christ’s right hand. The thief on his left, who rejected Christ’s invitation to paradise, was however covered.
It’s not just Jesus and the Blessed Mother who the bees seem to not be interested in covering. Monk Simon also reported bringing an icon of St. Stephen the Proto-Martyr and Archdeacon, which was left uncovered over the saint’s face and body.

The mystery endures as to how the bees can recognize holy images, let alone treat them in a respectful and pious manner. We may never know the exact reasons, but we can enjoy the fascinating photos that this curious occurrence has produced.

Please explain.  How a guy I know, who lives on my street, who takes these photos with his telescope, gets these pictures?  Are you telling me that this random guy who does this as a hobby is part of the outer space conspiracy.

What you will find on the Orthodox side is a complete inability to explain how for the first thousand years, they submitted to Rome, obeyed Rome, and acknowledged Rome's supremacy over the whole Christian world.  This is so clearly and profoundly docuмented, it takes a truly dishonest man to deny it.  But dishonesty is the essence of the Orthodox apologist.

The reason I've had to do so much reading on this is because my brother did exactly what you are considering, he abandoned the wave-tossed Barque of Peter in favor of the loose confederation of waring tribes that is Orthodoxy.  He lost his faith eight or nine years ago, and hid it very well.  Two years ago, he surprised all of us by becoming a catechumen at the local Antiochian Orthodox Church.

He ceased to believe the words and promises of Christ, and in the midst of the storm, he chose to jump ship rather than patiently endure the passion of the Mystical Body of Christ.  The temptation to gaze upon the crucified Church, held up to the whole world as an object of ridicule, and to doubt that this truly is the Church Christ founded is a tremendous trap.  My brother can't fathom how this could happen to the True Church, in the same way that so many of the apostles and Jєωs couldn't fathom how God Himself could be crucified.  Is the servant above his Master?  Do we deserve anything less?

His church was not founded on the Rock of Peter.  His church does not have the keys.  His church does not have the promise of Christ, that the gates of hell will never prevail against it.

You seek safety and security, peace and tranquility.  You will not find it in Orthodoxy.  Not only because it is a false religion, but because they have nothing but stagnation and disunity to offer.  They are the tattered remnants of a long-dead empire, a decaying corpse that should have been buried centuries ago.

And you will have to be prepared to deny the Immaculate Conception of Our Lady.  You will have to reject the true nature of original sin, taking on a Pelagian view of it instead.  You must be prepared to deny the distinction between mortal and venial sin, the concepts of purgatory, indulgences, and reparation.  Hell to the orthodox mind is undefined.  Prepare yourself to embrace Palamism, and an unending string of other errors.  And because of a lack of scholasticism and truth, you must be prepared to accept "it's a mystery" as an answer to any question they don't have an answer for, which are considerable.

No, you will not find what you're looking for there.

After the fall of Constantinople in 1453, the Patriarchs of that city have lived in complete subjugation to their Turkish overlords, even to this day.  The Patriarchates of Alexandria and Antioch shared a similar fate.  Moscow was made a patriarchate by Constantinople in 1589, was suppressed under Tsar Peter the Great in 1721, being replaced by "The Holy Synod" (under complete government control), and later resurrected in 1917 in time for the communist revolution.

None of them have any missionary spirit, since under the Turks they were forbidden to evangelize.  That only seems to have changed now, not because the Greeks are worthy of attention, but because of the catastrophe of the current crisis.   In other words, the Novus Ordo church is so bad, it makes the Greeks look good.  No one would seriously consider the Orthodox as a viable option in 1950.  The main reason people are struggling with it now is because they don't believe the words of Christ: "Thou art Peter, and upon this Rock I will build My Church, and the gates of hell shall never prevail against it."

If I remember correctly, I think the actual 'computing capacity' is no more than 1 jpeg's worth of data.  From billions of miles away.  Who is sitting there monitoring it, waiting for that single jpeg to come in?  What will a jpeg tell us - that it's cold out there?
What is 1 jpeg's worth of data? I have a jpeg on my computer that is 29.5MB. 29.5MB can equate to 10-15min of high quality music, or 40-60min of medium quality speech audio. That's several floppy disks worth of information. Why don't you look up what they are trying to record? I know you won't believe them, but it's more credible than speculation.

On a related subject this is the most ludicrous thing I've ever read: https://www.theguardian.com/science/2024/apr/23/voyager-1-transmitting-data-again-after-nasa-remotely-fixes-46-year-old-probe so you're telling me a 70s computer billions of miles away is able to receive a signal on an ancient medium (that somehow is still working) in 22hrs with no obstructions? No meteors, flares, planets etc obstruct the signal there and back? Come on
70's computers still work. Maybe it's the beefy simple design that aids their durability. I can't comment on the durability of tapes though, but I don't know why they couldn't send a command for it to rewrite it's programming to correct for corruption. They likely built the components to be more durable knowing it was going into space. You can actually buy circuit board components rated for use in space. I think they are gold plated to shield from radiation. It is hard to believe it can still receive signals from that far away with old tech, and that signals from it can be heard all the way here, but maybe the new tech we have is capable of sending a strong enough signal, and capable of detecting such faint signals from it. I don't know, I don't work there and neither do you, so I won't say what is and isn't possible. Once upon a time touch screen smartphones were a certain impossibility.
