Crisis in the Church / Re: Pual VI Smoke of Satan quote source

I wonder if a member of the SSPX was present in 1972 with a recorder. You'd think they would have released such a recording long ago.

If I forgot it was Friday and had ham for breakfast did I commit a sin?

To expand on this, was the sin (if committed) mortal or venial?

I have made a quick search for the  smoke of Satan phrase in Italian and I could find nothing but the paraphrases.

There is not, apparently, a full transcript of the homily. Kind of strange, considering how (in)famous this quote became.

General Discussion / Re: Introduce yourself!

Hello everyone,

I've recently found Catholicism and within the last few months it feels as if I've been drinking from a fire hose. I fell pretty hard for it as soon as I opened myself up to it. I was never anti-Catholic at all, and I guess you could say I was LARP'ing as a protestant before, desperately trying to feel anything amid the guitar solos and unserious nature of the worship. My girlfriend grew up in a Catholic family but was never baptized and is agnostic so I'm trying to pull her over currently.

Anyway, I had my first experience of the Latin Mass last night and was blown away by the reverence and solemnity of the worship. It was everything I thought it should be. Even in my naivety, it always made more sense that everyone was turned toward Christ and not facing one another.

That's it. I also like fried chicken.
I laughed a lot at the fried chicken.

Welcome!  We are here for you if you have any questions. :cowboy:

Good morning everyone, I'm new to the forum. I am a Catholic revert and recently discovered tradition within the last year which was even further solidified when I attended an SSPX Ignatian retreat in March. I'm married with three young children. My wife is also a practicing Catholic but has not yet embraced tradition as I have. I would like to hear from any others that are in a similar situation with their spouse and how they have handled it.
Gently explain to her what you just wrote to us...

And pray for her.

It may take her a bit for her to come over (especially if she has a lot of friends in the novus ordo) but hopefully that will happen sooner rather than later.

Maybe you can invite some traditional Catholic families in your area over for dinner?

It helps most women if they have someone they can connect with to make the jump.

I quoted the CCC to show that even the new church has something right.  This idea that you cannot commit mortal sins if you are ignorant is not logical. It's like that meme of the Eskimo who says why did you tell me about God if I am condemned? Why bother educating people about sin if their ignorance keeps them from mortal sin. It also appears contrary to scripture, St Paul says drunkards will not enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Yet most people do not know that drunkenness is a sin, surely these people will be condemned for their drunkenness and their ignorance won't change that?

I wonder how accurate is the translation of what I quoted, or is it just the SSPX's words? The google translation just doesn't come across the same. The SSPX translation looks a bit odd, but otherwise can strongly imply that Paul VI knew how the smoke of Satan entered the Church. But, if someone were to look up the quote, they will find it was reordered and composed from a summary to sound like a direct quote from him. That kind of ruins their credibility, not a good start for a pamphlet to convert people.

Is this the paraphrased summary you are referring to?  And by translation, do you mean if you click on the "English" option on the page?

For the anonymous who quoted "the new CCC":

This is not a real Catholic catechism. This is the Novus Ordo catechism. People won't take your arguments seriously if you quote Modernist books, and you take a serious risk of learning some grave errors by reading this horrible books.

Be aware of Modernism.
