A lot of Trump voters were Bernie Sanders supporters. Fiscal populism is a very, very popular way of thinking here. They see that some countries, e.g. Norway who have:Excellent healthcareFree, if not very affordable collegeA living wageNo interventionist policiesAnd they think: "Why are we not like that?"
I wouldn't consider Sanders a socialist. Socialism is the abolition of privatization, period. No one worth their salt is advocating for that in American society. If there were a functioning socialist state, someone with his mix of privatization and social democracy would be considered a far-right conservative.
