He's playing politics. He thinks Ryan is likely to win over Nehlen, and would rather that Ryan, being one of the more important Republicans, lost his excuse to be uncooperative. I've read that Nehlen himself said he understood why Trump endorsed Ryan.

I think slick Willie and the old hag have met their match in shrewdness. Not that I'm saying endorsing Ryan was the shrewdest move imaginable. But across the board. Neither the Jewocrats nor the Jewblicans can figure out what to do with him. LoL

It's just for him to save face. Think of all the national politicians that flip on things like it's candy to protect their hide. Trump doesn't care about Ryan. It's primary day in Wisconsin and I'm pretty sure he wants him to lose his seat.
National politics is all like that. Most people on the national level are duplicitous asses. You get some outliers, but they don't win elections.

98% White.
Ryan is a typical Rino Republican who is giving Obama most want he
wants. He is pro Muslim immigration and wants more. He is all for
free trade agreements and the TTP that promises to outsource
more manufacturing jobs overseas and increasing unemployment
among Americans.
Many young professional Whites in places like Wisconsin are so
thoroughly brainwashed by the College Professors in the Universities
are joining the ruling elites and the oligarchs to put the final nails
sealing the coffin called America, and hand her over to the NWO.
