  • HOUSTON - A lesbian candidate won Houston's mayoral election Saturday night, a vote that made the city the largest in the U.S. to ever have an openly gαy mayor.

"This election has changed the world for the gαy, lesbian, bisɛҳuąƖ and transgendered community. Just as it is about transforming the lives of all Houstonians for the better, and that's what my administration will be about," City Controller Annise Parker told supporters after former city attorney Gene Locke conceded defeat.

Parker got 53 percent of the vote. More than 152,000 residents turned out to cast ballots in the fourth largest U.S. city.

The campaign leading up to Saturday's balloting was marked by anti-gαy rhetoric.

Locke congratulated Parker and urged the city to move on. "Here's what our city needs now: It needs unity. It needs us to come together and heal like we've never healed before, and to move forward under a new administration," he said.

Parker's sɛҳuąƖ orientation became the focus of the race in recent weeks after anti-gαy activists and conservative religious groups endorsed the 61-year-old Locke and sent out mailers condemning Parker's "ɧoɱosɛҳųαƖ behavior."

Meanwhile, gαy and lesbian political organizations nationwide rallied to support the 53-year-old Parker by raising money for her campaign and making calls urging people to vote.

Locke, who would have become the city's second black mayor if elected, tried to distance himself from the anti-gαy attacks while courting conservative voters who could tip the race in his favor.

Although Locke condemned the divisive rhetoric, two of his key supporters contributed money to a conservative political action committee that sent out an anti-gαy mailer earlier this month, urging voters not to pick Parker because she was endorsed by the "gαy and lesbian political caucus."

Campaign finance reports show Ned Holmes, finance chairman of Locke's campaign, and James Dannenbaum, a member of the campaign's finance committee, each gave $20,000.

Parker and Locke, both Democrats in the nonpartisan race, made it to the runoff after garnering more votes than two other candidates on Nov. 3.

Parker replaced Bill White, who is term-limited after serving six years and is seeking the Democratic nomination for governor.

Several smaller U.S. cities have openly gαy mayors, including Portland, Ore., Providence, R.I., and Cambridge, Mass.

Houston, the country's fourth largest city, is predominantly Democratic and about 25 percent black and one-third Hispanic. About 60,000 of its 2.2 million residents identify as gαy or lesbian.

  • Houston is a big sprawly place. 152,000 voted out of   2 million, and 53% favored the mayor = 80,000?

Hardly a mandate. Life will go on while the politicos persuade themselves they "make a difference."

  • Kinky is already running for something else, in agriculture...

Samurai, have you ever seen him up close? That guy's eyes are cold, scarey cold, FWIW....

Farouk Shami, the muslim/catholic running for governor, seems to be actually making a play to get all his hair-products ads out there. *LOL*

I frankly don't see any of these candidates as meaning much. The only thing I like about Perry is his sympathy for the secessionist vote....

Remember, if at first you don't secede: try, try again!

I was afraid so (just checked since the topic was up). He would be better off running for Governor, but if he get's the position of Ag Com. then I guess it's better than nothing... actually I can see his political strategy in doing so.

Yeah I've seen him on tv quite a few times. He's not the only guy who has cold eyes, so he doesnt have me worried.

I dont care what Perry say's he will do because his votes say otherwise. Afterall, he was the one who said that he would approve the TransTexasCorridoor if it passed the House. The only reason he's saying that he supports secession is so that he will stand another chance at election and he wants the secessionists vote. (Correct me if Im wrong, but I was told there are no term limits for Tex.Gov).  I mean have we already forgotten who he was appointed Gov. by? A globalist member of Skull & Bones whom he constantly backed. We cant be giving 3strike-out politicians the benefit of the doubt, they've had their chance. And we cant be following false opposition every time it presents itself! We have to back people who have proven themselves, or at least, truely professes sound political and economic policies, or not vote at all.

  • You apparently think the trans-tex corridor a good thing, why so?

Actually, the position of Tex governor is not a very powerful position, unlike some other states. The main reason people want it is that it is a visible springboard for national office...

I don't see how the skull-bones good-ol-boy circle is really that different from the other connected relationships that exist in the left. It is all a game of tweedle-dee tweedle-dum, IMO.

Keep one eye on who is running and the other eye on who is helping. The support circles are where the policies get made.

I didnt say the TTC was a good thing, but Perry has given it his vocal support plenty of times.

Yes I know the power is in Lt.Gov, but it's very helpful to have a Independent in the office (even though he lists himself a democrat now, he's definitely a Ind.).

The Skull & Bones circle is the tip of the power pyramid in this country. They decide who fills the spaces at the bottom if the citizens dont fill them themselves.

  • Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison has a 75% rating from NRLC and 7% from NARAL.

    http://www.ontheissues.org/social/Kay_Bailey_Hutchison_Abortion.htm

I wrote her as part of a mailing campaign against FOCA and she responded promptly and intelligently. My other Senator, John Cornyn, who does have a 100% score from NRLC, didn't respond. My Congresswoman, Sheila Jackson Lee, also responded quickly but to lecture me on a woman's right to all available "health care options."

Sen. Hutchison is also solidly against gαy "marriage" and affirmative-action, gun control, and global warming hysteria.

    http://www.ontheissues.org/senate/Kay_Bailey_Hutchison.htm

Unfortunately, she is also a solid part of the Neo-Con world-dominance machine.

I think on Catholic issues she stacks up favorably against Friedman, Perry or Farouk.

Nonsense. She signed onto a pro-choice group some time ago called the Wish List...
    http://www.thewishlist.org/2005-2006_Candidates.htm.

... however, they didnt endorse her in the end as she left. She has been flirting a lot with the pro-choice position, not to mention the fact that she voted for the bailout and strongly supports sex-education in schools and is one of the wasteful spenders that need to be kicked out. The lady has had her chance and she's blown it. I already know who Im voting for Governor this year....
