Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on her Catholic faith and the urgency of a criminal justice reform

Christ came to me emblazoned on the upper arm of my beloved cousin Marc. The blue-black ink danced between the bullet scars and stretch marks that graced my cousin’s upper body. Atop this crown-of-thorns depiction was a tattooed banner with the phrase “Only God Can Judge Me.”
I have never known Marc as a criminal. I have only known him as the largest and funniest member of my family. As a child, I saw this tattooed arm over and over again. It appeared at family cookouts turning a lechón(roasted pig) in its fifth hour, it held me steady on Marc’s broad lap, and it was revealed during the wintertime, when our pipes would hiss until the relentless heat would force us all to roll our sleeves as far up as they would go.

I remember reading his tattoo each time I saw it, trying to understand what it meant: Only God Can Judge Me. Innocence, in its mercy, partly excuses us from having to fully reckon with the spiritual gifts of forgiveness, grace and redemption at the heart of the Catechism: I believe in the forgiveness of sins.
Marc—like several men in my family—had been caught in the webbed threads of poverty, geography and lack of opportunity during the fever pitch of 1990s mass incarceration. Baggy-pant boys like him fit the descriptions of “super-predators” and “thugs” that dominated our national discourse at the time. Marc served his time, and has been out of the system ever since—a miraculous feat, given that over 75 percent of released state prisoners in the United States are rearrested within five years. Today he is a union worker and a happily married father of three successful children.

The still imprisoned are not so lucky. By virtually every measure, the United States incarcerates more of its people than any other nation in the world. When we look at the fuller picture of who we imprison, for how long and why, it may not be a stretch to conclude that our criminal justice system could very well benefit from a rite of penance of its own. There is overwhelming evidence that mass incarceration evolved as an outgrowth of Jim Crow laws, which itself was a system rooted in the subjugation of former slaves. According to legal scholar Michelle Alexander, there are more African-Americans under correctional control today than were enslaved in 1850—that is, before the cινιℓ ωαr.
When it comes to Latinos, the numbers are more confusing. While 40 states track race in their arrest records, only 15 states in the nation track ethnicity. This means that most states have little to no data on Latinos in the criminal justice system. We must also look at what imprisonment entails. Criminal justice reform must take into consideration factors including increasingly punitive Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations and the black-box detainment of immigrants and separated families; the ethics of solitary confinement; parole and probation; protecting due process; and the effects of incarceration on motherhood and mental health.

What should be the ultimate goal of sentencing and incarceration? Is it punishment? Rehabilitation? Forgiveness? For Catholics, these questions tie directly to the heart of our faith.

Discussions of reforming our criminal justice system demand us to ask philosophical and moral questions. What should be the ultimate goal of sentencing and incarceration? Is it punishment? Rehabilitation? Forgiveness? For Catholics, these questions tie directly to the heart of our faith.

  • She won by not kowtowing to the corporations and the almighty Dollar, which is nice. That bidding to the masters is one of the reasons why many politicians in the US are outrageously wealthy.'

At the same time, she grew up in one of the nation's wealthiest counties and has a degree from an expensive private college. Working-class, my tuches. No reason why any decent human being would want to be a socialist unless they deliberately want to starve to death.

  • Report: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the ‘girl from the Bronx,’ raised in one of wealthiest US counties

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez paints herself as just a "girl from the Bronx." But the truth is deeper than that. (Scott Heins/Getty Images)

During her campaign, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the Democratic Party’s rising “democratic-socialist” icon, painted herself as the “girl from the Bronx.” She uses the image to project herself as a working-class woman determined to represent her people’s interests in Washington.
“I wasn’t born to a wealthy or powerful family — mother from Puerto Rico, dad from the South Bronx. I was born in a place where your Zip code determines your destiny,” she told the Washington Post this week, reiterating similar sentiment during an interview with Stephen Colbert.

However, her “girl from the Bronx” moniker doesn’t paint a complete picture.
    What’s the truth?
Indeed, it’s true just one year ago the 28-year-old woman, who will almost surely become the youngest woman ever elected to Congress, was working as a bartender. Yes, she also defeated 10-term congressman Rep. Joe Crowley (D-N.Y.), who was widely believed to succeed House Minority Leader Nancy Peℓσѕι (D-Calif.) as the next Democratic leader in the House.
According to the New York Times, it’s true Ocasio-Cortez was born into the doldrums of the Bronx. However, at the ripe age of 5, Ocasio-Cortez’s late father, Sergio Ocasio, an architect, moved her family an hour north to Yorktown Heights, a wealthy suburb of New York City in Westchester County.
Yorktown Heights, ironically, is the opposite of the Bronx. In a 1999 New York Times profile of Yorktown Heights, the town supervisor described it as “a folksy area where people can come, kick off their shoes, wander around, sit in a cafe, listen to a concert in the park, or go to the theater.” Ocasio-Cortez would have been about 10 years old at the time.
Overall, Westchester County is one of the most wealthy counties in the United States; it’s even where former President Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton reside.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, nearly three-quarters of the county’s 980,000 people are white, the average home price is more than a half million dollars, the median household income is nearly $90,000 and just 10 percent of the county lives in poverty. CNBC even ranked the county as the 8th richest county in the U.S. when considering wealth concentration of the area’s richest 1 percent.
Ocasio-Cortez lived in Westchester County until she left for college. She attended Boston University, where she graduated in 2011 with a bachelor’s degree in economics and international relations.
Ocasio-Cortez now resides in the same Bronx neighborhood, Parkchester, where she lived prior to moving to Westchester County.

  • I thought her last residence was Florida.   It seems that the tactic is move liberals to areas to win.

  • If she can run and win as a socialist, then someone can run as a traditional Catholic.

No, she's lived in her district - a working-class area of the Bronx and Queens - for a while, including being born there. We can at least credit her with that.

  • It doesn't matter.  She worked at what?   She won by promising free food, free housing, free medical.  I give no credit to a feminist heretic.
