Maybe you should check on a map to see where El Salvador is located. That's a heckuva run and flee when one has to pass through two, or three, countries to avoid whomever is chasing them.
BTW, the irony this situation presents is remarkable. Having to run from (and through) predominately Catholic countries so that one can make their way to a predominately non-Catholic country.
It amazes me how little knowledge of Latinamerican history there is on this side of the border. Fɾҽҽmαsσɳɾყ forced independence from Spain and broke up the continent into separate countries. Since then, through interventions and cινιℓ ωαrs, most of the latinamerican governments have been puppets from the American Fɾҽҽmαsσɳɾყ. People remained catholic but the puppet governments introduced Protestantism and other religions to slowly corrupt society and spread ignorance, and with economic and military support they got rid of the real Catholic leaders (e.g. Moreno in Ecuador, Cristeros in Mexico). Latinamerica also received a lot of immigrants from Europe in the XIX century and because of the Catholicism these immigrants were absorbed into the culture (a true melting pot), unlike the US where they remained isolated in groups for several decades. Even though latinamericans are not the same as +50 years ago, even with the increasing corruption, the general population still see each other as children of the same mother (Spain), helping when they can. You can see that with Colombia, Peru and Ecuador helping Venezuelan immigrants. Along the US border, specially in Tijuana, you can see people from all over the world that could not cross into the US (from China, Africa, Haiti, you name it) and even though there is a lot of trouble, there are many Church and laity organizations that work on integrating them to the society because they are not going back to their countries. Unfortunately the drug cartels and gangs take advantage of these desperate people and if they refuse to work for them, they kill them. All of this is hard to understand if you have not lived in these countries, so I don't blame you at all.
