[...] who fits that description? VDARE has a pretty good piece [†] briefly assessing the likely candidates.
Indeed it
does! One of the rumored candidates might be confirmed and seated, most urgently, in reasonable expectation of ruling to prevent the 2020 presidental election from being stolen. But some candidates must be considered
unsuitable when evaluated for the
immigration patriotism that they would apply to cases of immigration, asylum, or deportation before the U.S. Supreme Court (SCotUS).
Conservative voters in
Florida who could be counted as
immigration patriots have been burned on immigration issues by politicians having close emotional connections to
foreign countries, notably
Cuba:
• By 2
U.S. Senators: Former Gov.
Mel Martinez ("R"), a native of Cuba; and
Marco Rubio ("R"), the son of immigrants from Cuba who were still Cuban nationals when he was born in
Alta Habana Miami. Both supported illegal immigrants instead of their Florida-citizen lawful constituents, in aggressively trying to pass
amnesty for illegal immigrants, which they advocated, then as now, as "immigration
reform" (2006, 2013, respectively). Martinez's efforts were a blatant reversal of his campaign statements.
• By at least 1
U.S. Representative (many times):
Ileana Ros-Lehtinen ("R"), a native of Cuba; it seemed that every time she'd make the news in Central Fla., she was acting on behalf of illegal immigrants, not her Florida-citizen lawful constituents.
Sooo, no way in Hades would
I want Pres. Trump to take a chance on U.S. 11th Circuit Ct. of Appeals Judge (and formerly Fla. Supreme Ct. Justice)
Barbara Lagoa, who is the daughter of Cuban natives who fled Castro in the 1960s, and earned her J.D. degree at notoriously leftist Columbia (ain't South Carolina) Law School. I believe that it's entirely reasonable to expect that for cases on immigration, she'll follow the
open-borders leads of other U.S. officials who are natives of Cuba, or their offspring, notably U.S. Sens. Martinez and Rubio.
But of course, Pres. Trump won't be seeking my opinion.
Sigh.--------
