  • The Jehovah's Witnesses have been banned as an extremist group in a Thursday Supreme Court decision that observers feared signaled a further step back for religious liberty.
“For Jehovah's Witnesses, this is going to be a frightening time,” Lorcan Price, ADF International legal counsel in Strasbourg, told CNA April 21.
“It effectively means that holding their beliefs and manifesting them is tantamount to a criminal act in Russia. They risk new levels of persecution by the Russian authorities.”
Price saw the move as continuing the reversal of positive trends in post-Soviet Russia.
“What we're seeing really is the slide back into the type of attitude that characterized the worst of oppression in the 20th century by the Soviet regime in Russia,” he added. “It’s obviously very sad and disheartening to see that happening again.”
Russia's Justice Ministry in March ordered that the Jehovah's Witnesses denomination be liquidated and disbanded. Judges ordered the closure of the denomination’s Russian headquarters and almost 400 local chapters. The denomination’s property would also be seized.
The denomination's lawyer, Viktor Zhenkov, said the group would appeal the court ruling upholding the order.
“We consider this decision an act of political repression that is impermissible in contemporary Russia,” Zhenkov told the New York Times.
Russia has duties under the European Court of Human Rights to protect freedom of worship and belief.
The Russian Orthodox Church is predominant in Russia, and some of its members have pushed to outlaw or curb the Jehovah’s Witnesses. Russia’s federal security service, the FSB, also holds the denomination under deep suspicion.
Svetlana Borisova, who represented the Justice Ministry in the Supreme Court, charged that the denomination’s members had shown “signs of extremist activity that represent a threat to the rights of citizens, social order and the security of society.”
Price said the ruling was “very disappointing and shocking,” but not surprising given negative trends.
“Last year in particular the government adopted some very draconian and far-reaching legislation that has severely disrupted the right of worship and freedom of belief in Russia,” he said.

Anti-terrorism measures have given Russian police powers to disrupt private worship services, to arrest and detain individuals handing out unapproved religious materials, and to outlay any publish preaching without prior approval from Russian authorities.

The Jehovah’s Witnesses suffered intense persecution under the Soviet era until the fall of communism in 1991. A 2002 anti-extremism law and a broader definition of extremism in 2006 once again put legal pressure on the denomination
Price said an appeal to the European Court of Human Rights could produce a positive response, but Russia has “a long history of ignoring decisions” from that court, which relies on diplomatic pressure to enforce its decisions.
“For Christians and minority faiths in Russia this is a frightening time,” he said. “Obviously we hope that people will pray for them.”
“What we hope is ultimately the Russian government will take notice of international condemnation and reverse these policies.”

I am no fan of the Jehovah's Witnesses. However what happens to them could very easliy happen to the Catholic Church, particularly the Eastern rite Catholics in Russia.

  • Poche - I did not read the article.  But, I heard about this news about a week ago.  And, no there will be no identifiable parallel done to catholics, unless the catholics are not acting catholic.  This is simply another measure that russia uses to counter the west(jehovas witness is a "bronx" creation, and headquartered in the bronx).  If trump wants to bomb syria, then russia will say, if you must, but we will in turn torture the ɧoɱosɛҳųαƖs so on and so forth(which happened in one of the muslim communities in russia or in the east under russian control immediately after that syria bombing).  And, trump will say to putin, okay, torture them.  So, I assume this is just a measure of that sort.  And, trump says, I am a Presbyterian.

  • I have no problem that Russia banning the Jehovah Witnesses and I say it is a smart move.  After all they are a
false religion and they hate the Catholic Religion.
I have the Jehovah Witnesses come to my door trying to convert me.  The best way to rid them is that I will say that
I am a practicing Roman Catholic and that they are on the road to hell if they continue in their false religion.
Poche, you need to put your Catholic Religion ahead of any false religion. No one on CI takes your ecuмenicalism
    seriously.

From around 1944 until its independence the existence Eastern rite of the Catholic Church was illegal. Bishops, priests, nuns and normal Catholics were sent to prison for remaining loyal to the Catholic Church. Even to posess literature of teh Church would merit a sentence in prison.

I agree with you that the Jehovah's witnesses are a false religion. My concern is what will happen to our fellow Catholics in Russia and what is likely to happen to them in the event that the Ukraine is absorbed back into the Russian Federation. While there is much that can be said to be good in the Russian Orthodox, they do have a blind spot when it comes to our Eastern rite Catholic brothers.

  • The Russian Supreme Court has declared the Jehovah’s Witnesses an extremist organization and ordered the confiscation of its property—prompting criticism from the secretary-general of the Catholic bishops’ conference.
“Churches like ours don’t recognize the Jehovah’s Witnesses as Christian and don’t engage in dialogue with them, but we must distinguish theological issues from legal rights,” Msgr. Igor Kovalevsky said of the decision, which outlawed the sect.
He added, “There are very strong misgivings among Catholics that we, too, may be facing, if not persecution, then at least new acts of discrimination and limits on our freedom of belief.”

    i don't totally agree
but LOL about how you deal w/ JWs. I have been in a few discussions w/ them. I didn't get the feeling they hate Cahtolics but I'm sure some do. The Assemblies of G folks are the real anti-Catholics and SDAs! that's been my experience anyway. I don't necessarily think it was a smart move for Russia to ban JWs. Next it will be Catholics, assuming that hasn't already pretty much happened

They came to my house one time. However they left very quickly when they found out that I had no money to give them.

  • Police in Kazakhstan raided two Baptist churches on Easter Sunday, fining worshippers and having them sign a form stating they were attending an illegal meeting.
Kazakhstan recognizes religious bodies that have registered with the state, but the nation’s Baptists have refused to seek registration.
The Asian nation of 18.4 million is 70% Muslim, 26% Christian (primarily Russian Orthodox), and 3% atheist.

  •      Having once "studied" with JWs 30 years ago, when I had no concrete beliefs, I know for a fact that they are LOVING this ban.  They actually pride themselves on being "persecuted".  They interpret persecution as anyone who criticizes them so this ban will be a boon.
And to the poster who remarked that JWs are not Christians; how true.  They do not believe in a triune God, a soul, heaven, hell, the crucifixion or various other marks of Christianity.
ALSO, they DO hate Catholics but you don't know that until you become involved with them; kinda like how the mormons keep a lot of what they are about from the un-indoctrinated.

  • The head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church has recalled the 70th anniversary of Operation Vistula, in which the Communist governments of Poland and the Soviet Union forcibly deported over 140,000 Ukrainians from their homes in Poland.
“Seventy years ago, a mortal danger loomed over our Church in postwar Poland,” said Major Archbishop Sviatoslav Shevchuk. “The anniversary of the criminal deportation must serve us the opportunity to heal the memory, so that knowing the truth, through the power and acts of God’s Spirit, we become freer and stronger.”

  • Russia’s Supreme Court has upheld an earlier court decision banning the Jehovah’s Witnesses.
The court accepted the Putin administration’s argument that the group’s literature incites hatred.
The group, founded in 1870 by Charles Taze Russell, has 395 congregations in Russia, which the court ordered to be disbanded. The United States and EU condemned the Russian court decision.

  • Jehovah Witnessses are NOT Christians and have a distorted and lesser view of our Savior. The Watchtower has been involved in illegal activities for years and are used as a political tenticle of the CIA- Putin isn't stupid. Barring that, error has no rights. I think that's Catholic.

  • Before the takeover by the Vatican II church, in the real Catholic countries, Catholicism was the legal constitutional state religion amd none others were permitted to proselytize in public or to have signs in their assembly places. That was religious freedom, tolerance for error, but it had its limits, and the limits are as I stated.

Russia is not a Catholic country and really never has been. The Jehovas Witnesses are 1) a false religion, 2) they proselytize. If Russia wanted to ban all religions except the regional traditional religions of Russian Orthodox, Catholic, Mohamedans, I have no problem with it. I doubt that Russia is any different than France, where only at max 4% of the population go to mass. Russia is as "religious" as France. Pretty much zilch.
