Kenya (listed as Obama's father's nation of birth) wasn't called Kenya in 1961. It was the British East Africa Protectorate. It was not known as "Kenya" until 1963.
In 1961, the hospital Obama was born in was NOT named the Kapiolani Maternity & Gynecological Hospital , as shown on the above certificate. In 1961, the hospital Obama was born in was named the Kauaikeolani Children's Hospital. It did not change its name to the Kapiolani Maternity & Gynecological Hospital until it merged with the Kapiolani hospital system in 1978.
It bothers me that the pundits talk as if the evidence that Obama was born in Hawaii had always been irrefutable. The fact is that there has been credible evidence given that he may have been born outside the United States.
I cannot comment on the hospital name as I don't know. However, on the country name, I have to tell you that you are mistaken. Although the official name of this African territory was the British East Africa Protectorate, this area was commonly known as Kenya and is shown to be such in a 1949 Atlas that I have here at my desk. The atlas in fascinating as it shows the world as it was immediately after World War II (for example, there are no interstate highways and Africa is shown as largely a conglomeration of European colonies). The Atlas shows the area south of Somaliland, north of the Tanganyika Territory, and east of Uganda is "Kenya".
Just as the country of Burma today is officially called the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, people from that region call the country "Burma". I know some Burmese people and they do not use name Myanmar. It is actually probably that, when filling out birth certificate information, the mother or father would have said the father's place of birth was Kenya. I can also see the nurse or clerk asking where that was (especially in 1961--I doubt many people knew anthing about Kenya was until the mid-1960s show Daktari) and the reply being "East Africa." This entry on an authentic docuмent is completely reasonable and even probable.
I have to say that I am willing to accept this as evidence of Obama's citizenship, but to be absolutely convinced, some of the other inconsistencies that have been brought up (the Kenyan relatives' insistence that he had been born there, the passport, and SSA, for examples) need to be adequately explained.
I hesitate to say this, but it is not inconceivable that, given the last three years, there was time to forge docuмents. After all, since obviously forged docuмents were produced to "prove" something about Bush, those in the political forgery business have learned that forging historical docuмents has to be done with much more care and research than was needed in, say, 1961.
In any event, I won't worry about this any longer since it really does not matter. Whether he is eligible to be president or not, he will exercise the power of the president and I have no recourse. The only difference I see here between the secular power and the papal power is the Benedict 16 can't produce a docuмent (forged or no) that definitively proves all the heresies and novelties he has promoted over his lifetime are really Apostolic Traditions.
