New ties between Putin and the Vatican

Perhaps.

I think Putin showing up on the heels of Obama booting the US embassy into Rome MAY be a bit of a "rub it in" move on Putin's part, heh. Putin's pretty good at that.

But they'd be at loggerheads re: ecuмenism. Putin's been pretty hard-core about Muslims and Jews not getting much airtime/propaganda in Russia. A lot of "religious" hate Putin for that, but I doubt Frank would broach the subject (too humble).

And of course he wouldn't mention a consecration. The idea alone is laughable; Frank doesn't believe such a thing is necessary, and he doesn't like to offend world leaders, so he wouldn't risk it.

Yeah, I imagine they talked about Frank's chit list of "important stuff", like making sure everyone gets 3 squares a day, making sure the elderly are cared for, and that kind of political stuff. Syria, of course, and how they both hate war and think Obama's itching for one. Maybe Putin dropped a few bugs in Frank's ear about how he's going to prevent the U.S. from invading Iran or something.

I imagine Frank got word that Putin gets the next Nobel Peace Prize.

But would they talk about ROC + RCC. I ...just am not seeing it. Maybe they talked about having a "dialogue", or opening communications, but Putin doesn't (yet) represent the ROC, so I think any of that would be off-the-record stuff. If Frank tried to push Putin to accept "our brothers'" religious freedoms, well, let's just say people would probably been looking for more white smoke even now.

I don't see that having happened: the Anglicans and Greeks are probably mad that Frank entertained the ROC at all. The ROC is getting a bit ...picky, I'd say. Would they commune with the Lavender Mafia? Ask the gαy bands that have played in Russia lately; Putin's just not going to allow Lavender in Russia.

One of the things on his list is the well being of the Catholics in Russia.

Since they abandoned the Chinese Underground Catholics for political expediency what makes you think they care about the well being of a much small number of Russian Catholics?

He is talking to the leader of that country, that was on his list according to what I read.

"The Vatican press office reported that Putin and Pope Francis also discussed “the critical situation faced by Christians in some regions of the world,” and spoke of questions of common interest, like “life of the Catholic community in Russia, revealing the fundamental contribution of Christianity in society.”

Ggreg,

Don't be such a realist.  When Pope Francis does something you are supposed to just say "Wow, what a guy!"
