Most people think of the Times Man of the Year (now Person of the Year) to be an honor bestowed. It was never the intent that this is particularly an honor. The intent is that Time magazine is recognizing the one person who has most influenced the news during the year.
Barack Obama certainly deserves this recognition. He set out to "fundamentally transform" America and his re-election in November is evidence that he was successful in doing so.
He managed to be re-elected, not in spite of his policies that have wreaked havoc upon America, but because of them. The majority of the electors in the United States are wanton hedonists and I agree with Time magazine that the single most influential person who designed this situation is their Person of the Year. He ran for re-election by appealing to avarice, or, at least, to deprive anyone who has more than "you" of his wealth, and he overwhelmingly won. I don't believe this would have been possible prior to 2012 and Barack Obama is the single most influential personality who brought about today's America.
Barack Obama has made covetousness, not only socially acceptable, but a down right patriotic duty.
Time magazine has made the right selection.

But seriously, if the Times Man of the Year has promoted avarice, and has
not kept his campaign promises, and raised that national debt by handing
out freebies to "failing" big business (which fail largely because their
executives are overpaid), then perhaps there is some truth to this story:
Subject: Dying Priest..
In Washington, D.C., an old priest lay dying in the hospital. For years
he had faithfully served the people of the nation's capital and was well
known among the elected officials. He motioned for his nurse to come near.
"Yes, Father?" said the nurse.
"I would really like to see President Obama and Senator Reid before I
die," whispered the priest.
"I'll see what I can do, Father", replied the nurse.
The nurse sent the request to The President and Senate and waited for a
response.
Soon the word arrived; President Obama and Harry Reid would be delighted
to visit the priest.
As they went to the hospital, Obama commented to Reid, "I don't know why
the old priest wants to see us, but it will certainly help our images."
Reid agreed that it was a good thing.
When they arrived at the priest's room, the priest took Obama's hand in
his right hand and Reid's hand in his left hand.. There was silence and a look
of serenity on the old priest's face..
Finally President Obama spoke. "Father, of all the people you could have
chosen, why did you choose us to be with you as you near the end?"
The old priest slowly replied, "I have always tried to pattern my life
after our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ."
"Amen," said Obama. "Amen," said Reid.
The old priest continued, "Jesus died between two lying thieves; I would
like to do the same."
