  • instead of giving 2 bedroom apts to the disabled (only 1 person in apt), why not just build what you could call Poor Houses where everyone who needs one gets a simple ROOM in a place where the kitchen is shared, bathroom ditto

and let everyone who is down and out have those rooms. It would be Spartan, so no one would want to stay there all his/her life and there would be work offered

  • That's a sweet sentiment, but are you sure that this is true?

Should, for example, S. Benedict Joseph Labre have had a permanent address?

    What does "homeless" even mean?

Where did the Son of Man rest His head?

he is a saint (Labre) and probably would have done right even if he could not have traveled as a homeless person.
Basic needs should be met. People should take care of their family, their disadvantaged, their mentally infirm or what have you. But they kick them out of the house and they end up living on the street and then the taxpayer has to take care of them. Families like that (and i know of some) are irresponsible, to say the least. If the govt is going to foce people to take care of the unfortunate through taxes, maybe they should just force families to take care of their own. If the person doesn't have family, well, that's a different story

  • In the 30s, w/ the Depression, the FDR Admin did a lot to help the jobless, homeless, food-less, which was a big part of the population (Dust bowl etc)

They spent millions.. billions and b4 FDR even Hoover threw taxpayer money at this and that project to try to help people. But all that money just helped them "eat for a day" whereas didn't do much to help people in t he long run (teach them to fish)

I think having a roof over your head is a right. Therefore, if all that money had been spent on building places for people to get out of the weather, well, those buildings could still exist today to house the homeless we have today. Again, I am talking about very basic housing, nothing fancy... just rooms w/ access to showers/kitchens

When people have hteir basic needs met, then they can move on, work on getting a good job or an education, etc. But when all their resources are spent in just surviving... All they think of is surviving

something is very wrong. Again, people should be made to take care of their own. If a family feels they can't live w/ some family member for whatever reason... well, maybe they could get low interest loans to build a separate backyard cabin or whatever so that person and the family can have their space. That would be a HECK of a LOT cheaper than having them go on the govt dole.

I know  people who have very abusive families, just kick their own children out in the streets and those people are disturbed and depressed and have nowhere to go..

  • Well, there are a lot of homeless shelters where homeless people live. I have heard from someone with experience living in shelters that there are problems with them. Things like being dirty, bug-infested, people getting drunk and smoking crack or just being hard to live with. Many homeless people are insane and should be living in mental institutions, but there are far more insane people than rooms in mental institutions so they have to live in homeless shelters or on the street if they do not have family willing to take care of them. Many of them do not trust psychiatrists and refuse to take any medicine (which may or may not help) because they believe psychiatry is a Jєωιѕн or Illuminati mind-control conspiracy and they try to treat their problems by getting drunk or high. I know if I was not supported by my family it is likely that I would become homeless because I have disabilities that prevent me from supporting myself, so I am sympathetic to the homeless and may possibly become one of them in the future.

I don't like the word Insane here
    sorry for your troubles, though...
people who do not want to take meds are smart, not insane
(and other things I could say but don't have a lot of time)
society doesn't like certain kinds of people so they slap a label of Insane on them and try to dismiss them out of their minds so they dont have do anything 4 them.. so they can live for self
    in violation of Mt 25:31

I know about insanity from experience. Some people really are insane. Perhaps it is because they are possessed by devils, or perhaps there are natural reasons. I am not talking about people who are depressed or worry a lot, but about people who do not understand reality and sometimes even go into a state similar to a psychedelic drug induced trance where they go so completely insane, sometimes even having visions or hallucinations, and do crazy things without the use of their reason. You can go read about some of these experiences on one of the "schizophrenia" forums. And some of these people can be helped by medicine though it is largely guesswork. I also know this from experience. I think most people on drugs should not be on them but there are some people who really are insane and some of them can be helped somewhat by medicine and others are actually possessed and can be helped by exorcism.

    I don't disagree
partly I don't disagree bc I admit I don't know as much about such things as... maybe you do, certainly not as much as a Dr.
but anyway, I just don't like the way certain labels are carelessly tossed about, stuck on this person or that...
I know of people who believe the lies and distortions of truth that their parents drilled into them... parents who have  actual hatred toward their children... have heard of children used in Satanic rituals and etc... They are messed up but it has nothing to do with THEM and just about everything to do w/ their "parents" and/o others

  • have u ever stayed in a homeless shelter?
    not fun
For 6 years my husband and I ran a ministry that provided food and clothing that delivered to 5 different local sites (welfare motels, trailer parks where whole families lived in  tiny travel trailers, and a prison half-way house. Rain or shine every Friday we loaded our pick-ups and set out into the worst areas you can imagine.  Nearly everyone we served had substance abuse or mental issues. (And, I agree with Matto, call it what you like- a couple were absolutely insane, and one I am pretty sure was actually possessed.) Compared to some of those places the homeless shelter was clean and safe, believe me. (Some women with sons refused to go because older  boys were sometimes made to stay in the men's building without them.  I don't blame those moms.) I have seen things and heard stories that left indelible marks on my heart. But,  I'm no  sob-sister. Just because someone is homeless or disabled doesn't necessarily make them a 'good' person. So yeah, I know a 'little bit' about homeless shelters . I also know the main reason many don't like them is because of the rules for behavior and curfew are strict. Many would rather stay under the bridge with their booze and dope than come in out of the rain without them. Just sayin... As to whether I  ever stayed in one myself... you can pm me if you'd like.
